Wednesday, August 24,1994, Houston Times-Journal Page 8A Judge praises Perry war on drugs; lashes efforts in neighboring city By VETO F. ROLEY Staff Wrltar While Warner Robins might have a problem with drugs, Houston County Superior Court Judge L.A. McConnell told the Perry Exchange Club Thursday that Perry only had a small drug prob lem. "Perry has got a pretty good handle on it," said McConnell. "There are still pockets of drug dealers in Perry; but, if Mike Pheil hasn't got them, he will get them. "Most of the families (that deal in drugs in Perry) have been brought in," continued McConnell. "They (the Perry Police Department) knows who it is (still dealing drugs), and it is just a mat ter of time before they are brought in." McConnell told the Exchange Club that the reason Perry was more fortunate than Warner Robins was because of the disorganization of the Warner Robins Police Department in the wake of black mail convictions on the part of Warner Robins Mayor Ed Martin and Police Chief Johnson. jKd .mA jjHp A number of persons donated to the American Red Cross blood drive last week In Perry. McConnell Another problem facing Warner Robins, said McConnell, was the revamping of the city's anti-drug force. He said that Warner Robins had three officers on the drug squad, where they had eight in the past. "There is a real problem in Warner Robins," said McConnell. However, McConnell said that ’Donating Life' Around town ... briefly Loaves and Fishes need canned goods Loaves and Fishes of South Houston County is asking for donations of canned vegetables. Currently, said McConnell, Houston County has just over 160 prisoners under its jurisdiction, with around 35 being housed out side the county. Of the prison pop ulation, 35-40 are waiting for room to clear up in the state prison sys tem. "If they (Warner Robins) had the (anti-drug) capability, we could double the jail census in a week or so,” said McConnell, who added that 50-75 percent of the jail popu lation was there because of drugs or drug related crime. "I don't see any relief in the near future," McConnell told the Exchange Club. "There is not much we can do about pressure on the system. There are no easy solu tions." Despite the pressure on the jails, McConnell said he would continue to resort to prison sentences. "If we somebody that needs to be in jail," he said, "they will be in jail."
