Stewart's belief in class made career worthwhile By JIMMY SIMPSON Staff Writer Mary Ann Stewart knew early on that she had a real talent for teaching. The only problem was trying to find someone to instruct year round. "I had some idea of the real encounter of teaching because of the experiences prior to student teaching," the Morningside Elementary teacher said. "As each school year came to a close, I would find myself eager to begin the next..." Stewart's eagerness obviously paid off when this year she was named as one of 27 teachers nominated for "1994 System Teacher of the Year" in Houston County. But Stewart would patiently wait, all the while wishing that her career dream would begin as quick as it seemed to end each summer. "Despite the hours of outside planning and preparation, the particular group of children, the concerns of helping a child with special needs, the amount of energy that was exhausted, I knew I was called to teach and face the challenge of creating an environment of learning the basic skills while trying to enhance creativity and the desirable qualities of the individuals entrusted to me," she said. Stewart, who enters her 15th year in the profession (10th in Houston County) said she believes many personal beliefs revolving around teaching is demonstrated in her teaching style. "Learning and understanding the personalities and temperaments of my students indicates the type of teaching strategies and methods I need to use," said Saiwart. ”1 firmly believe that the basic skills needed for a student to be successful should not be Adam Charles Ehlers Adam Charles Ehlers was bom on Wednesday, July 27, 1994 to Charles and Cheri Ehlers. "I begin with the basics and add to them by using the resources from staff development courses, computer programs, learning centers, strategies from Project RIDE, Student Support Team meetings, parent conferences and shared experiences from other teachers. "As I teach, I try to focus on individual progress and provide students with an application and an appreciation for what is being taught. Stewart said that teachers should always remember their first committment-- teachine children "Also, teachers should also keep parents informed of progress, behavior, and changes in the students. Stewart said a familiar Bible verse should urge parents to watch with interest and pride the direction their particular child travels. "Proverbs 22:6 says, ’Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it'," Stewart. said. ”1 am teaching my own children, and my students, to follow the right path, and I look forward to seeing the blessings they receive from their training."
