Officer draws praise for arresting escapee By JIMMY SIMPSON Staff Writer A detective from the Perry Police Department is earning praise this week after nibbing an escaped Bleckley County inmate Aug. 23. Det. Bill Phelps was near Perry Middle School at approximately 3:30 p.m. when he noticed a man and car fitting the description given by Bleckley County law officials. The escapee, 44-year-old Willie J. Nixon, was believed to be armed and dangerous after overpowering a jailer and then stealing his keys, wallet and car en route to freedom on Aug. 21. Authorities believed the escapee was on his way to Perry due to this location being his last known address.
