Tuggle remembers
dove hunts, food
If you have gotten up early in the
morning during the past week, you
have felt the first cool signs of Fall.
September is just around the comer
with the opening day of dove sea
son.
The opening of dove season will
always bring fond memories of my
youth. Dove shooting was usually
the first form of hunting that young
hunters were exposed to, usually
picking up downed birds for their
father before they were old enough
to shoot
Some of my fondest memories
are of the long time friends and
relatives who met at our house be
fore the opening day dove shoot.
My mother would always have
enough food cooked to feed an
army and anymore else who
showed up could sit down and eat.
There was never a shortage of
food.
I will never forget the white
tablecloth that covered the food af
ter dinner was over. How things
have changed!
Back in those days people ate
dinner at 12 noon just as God in
tended. This was the big meal of
the day. No one would have
thought of eating a large meal at 9
or 10 p.m., and then going to bed
on a full stomach. Only Yankees
and a few city folks ate like that.
After the noon meal was fin
ished, my mother would cover the
left over food on the dining room
table with that white tablecloth and
it would sit there until we uncov
ered it for the evening meal, cor
recdy called supper.
The experts tell us now that all
food has to be immediately refrig
erated after each meal or you will
catch all kind of interesting bacte
ria and diseases. These things must
not have been invented when I was
young, as I do not remember any
stomach upsets or serious illnesses
from leaving the food on the table.
Maybe that white table cloth had
an effect on the germs.
Food has changed a lot since
then also. No pre-prepared frozen,
quick foods in those days.
There were always at least two
different kinds of meats on the
table and several different vegeta
bles. Who would think of sitting
down to eat without biscuits on the
table? A working man or growing
No boating zone at Lake Worth
The Department of Natural
Resources, Wildlife Resources
Division has established a "No
Boating Zone" above the dam at
Lake Worth to protect boaters and
anglers while dam repairs are
made.
This zone extends 600 feet above
the dam and will remain in effect
until the dam is repaired and the
lake has returned to its normal
level.
The dam at Lake Worth was
damaged during the July floods.
With the dam out, the Flint River
and Muckafonnee Creek have re-

boy would not survive on "light
bread".
Many of the foods that we ate in
those days have disappeared from
our diet. How many modem day
people have ever eaten salt mack
erel for breakfast?
My mother would buy the ex
tremely salty, mackerel that came
in little wooden buckets. She
would soak them over night to re
move some of the salt and then fry
them to eat with eggs, grits and hot
biscuits swimming with butter.
Try to find a salt mackerel in a
grocery store now. It would be en
cased in shrink-wrapped plastic
and have no taste, if you could find
it
My mother would take a baked
sweet potato, peal it, slice it into
slabs about one-half inch thick and
fry them for a few minutes. She
would then sprinkle a little sugar
on the slabs, and that really im
proved a sweet potato.
She would iso take left over
roast beef, slice it into half-inch
thick pieces, flour it and fry until it
was a little crispy on the outside. A
meal fit for a king from left-overs!
Now, all of the modem day nu
tritionists will probably tell you
that the above food will kill you
and should not be eaten.
Have you taken a look at the
men around Atlanta that are living
on a diet of pasta and other health
foods? They don’t look healthy!
They have that sort of sickly, ema
ciated look.
If I ever need help in a sticky,
dangerous situation, I believe that I
will pick a sugar and fat eating,
beer drinking redneck rather than a
health food addict from the city.
My Grandfather and
Grandmother Tuggle both lived to
be 86-years-old. My Grandmother
Harper lived to be 106-years-old,
and my father is 93-years-old and
in great health. All of them lived
on a diet of sugar, salt, and fried
food.
I believe that I will stick with
that diet. It seems healthier!
turned to their previous channels
and have created a dangerous situa
tion for boaters near the dam.
The 600-foot "No Boating Zone"
will remain in effect for several
months until the dam is fixed.
Once the lake is back to normal,
the distance of the zone will revert
back to its previous state of 50 feet
above Muckafonnee Creek dam
and zero feet above the Flint River
dam.

Taking kids fishing is a good time
One day during a weigh in at a
tournament site, I overheard a
young kid about 11 or 12 make this
comment: “1 wish my Dad liked to
fish, so then maybe I could get to
fish with him." I couldn’t help
myself and immediately asked why
he would say such a thing. All the
youngster would tell me is that his
dad never had time to do anything
but watch T.V. True or not, I
couldn’t really say, but the look on
his face could have convinced a jury
during any trial.
It takes so little to please a
young person, girl or boy, when it
comes to fishing. They only want a
chance to try something they see so
many other people do. They may
fall in love with the sport as
Susanne and I have, or maybe just
the one time is enough. We, as
adults and parents in most cases
owe this to our children. Let them
be the ones to decide if they like it
or not. So often we try to decide for
the kids and not take into
consideration how the kid feels.
How many parents do you know or
you may be one, make their or
insist their kid participate in a sport
or activity without even asking
their feelings or thoughts. Kids
have a mind of their very own and
it is up to us to help them develop
that mind but not mold it into what
we think he or she should be
involved in.
I have heard only too often that
fishing is too expensive and time
consuming; all the while the
individual saying this was buying
another golf club or baseball glove
for the softball league. There is
nothing wrong in either of those

"Too many people wait until the

the need for hunter safety

sports but don’t say fishing is too
expensive while reaching into your
pockets to buy something for your
own pleasure.
One of the most rewarding
experiences we’ve had was working
with the DNR during the national
Fair a couple of years ago. Susanne
and I, along with other volunteers,
set up a small fishing clinic
designed solely for the young
individuals. We started out with the
idea of being able to teach them
some things about fishing and
answering a few of the questions
they may have. As it turned out,
the kids were so enthusiastic over
the idea of fishing and catching
fish, we quickly just let them enjoy
fishing. During the course of the
fair, we met hundreds of young
fishermen and fisherwomen, who
will always have a place in our
hearts. One such joy was meeting a
young 13 year old boy from Macon
County. Tliis young lad had never
had the opportunity to fish. His
mother was widowed and she had to
work two jobs just to survive and
keep her family together. The
smiles and yells that came from
this young person will remain
burned into my memory forever.
Remember, we were all young
once, even though it may have been
a long time ago. I can remember
each time that Dad would stop
along the eastern border of Tattnall and the
western border of Evans County to Candler
County, then west along the southern border of
Candler County, then west along the southern
border of Candler to the Ohoopee River, then
north along the western border of Bulloch
County to U.S. Highway 301, then northeast
along 301 to South Carolina.
Houston County is in the northern division
for dove hunting.
There is a limit of 12 doves per day. Shooting
may not begin before noon on the opening day of
the season in both zones. The southern zone will
open Sept. 24.
The dove season is divided into three
windows. The first window in the northern

Today all states and Canadian

After one inning of play in the

Lanier held a 3-2 lead on the basis
of two-run blast with one out.
Mike Grier, batting deep in the
