To me, Georgia has several such lakes, Lake Seminole and Lake Lanier being tops on my list. Lake Seminole is rustic, back to basic, down to earth with Spanish moss hanging from 100-year-old trees and wildlife all around. Lake I tinier, on the other hand, is just the opposite. Just minutes from the Atlanta area, this lake is surrounded by large homes, large boats, and large incomes—all of which I cannot compete with. The lake itself is very beautiful, clear and deep. It offers, for those who know how to fish it, some great fun and adventure with strippers and spotted bass. Kentucky is one of the states we have had the opportunity to fish tournaments in. One Kentucky lake in particular has always been on the top of our "most beautiful lake in the state" list. Actually, there are two lakes that run parallel—Kentucky and Barkley. Both of these lakes, how ever, are totally different from each other. Lake Barkley is very shallow and difficult to fish, whereas Lake Kentucky is clear and deep. The area between the lakes is known as the Land Between the Lakes and has, for the most part, been left undis turbed since the last family was forced out during the construction. This area, in the early days, was rich farmland and many families were forced out by the TV A. To this day a lot of controversy re mains over the the way these fami lies were treated. When driving across the area, you can still see the old homesteads with some of the remains of build ings still standing. Now, there is nothing but woods where rich farm land once was. I think that each fall is prettier than the previous one and last fall was certainly the most spectacular in leaf color that I have ever seen. 1 have written many times about the anticipation in an outdoorsman’s heart with the approach of Fall and this article will be a combination of these many articles. The month of August is God's answer to eternity - the longest and most useless month of the year. There is nothing to hunt, gnats and mosquitos are rampant and teachers and students alike have to worry about the start of school. There is nothing to hunt and fishing is usu ally in the doldrums. With the month of September, everything changes. Dove season opens and the finest month of the year, October, is just around the comer. When I was a boy, we spent ined from skiing to spending a week-long vacation house boating. As for fishing, the same applies. Just about any type of fishing that you might enjoy can be found here. Crappie fishing ranks very near the top of the fishing popularity poll and, depending on who you talk to, it may rank first. For us die-hard bass fishermen, the variety of fishing expands greatly. Kentucky Lake has large mouth as well as spotted bass and smallmouth. But, this is just the beginning because mixed into all the bass fishing is the sauger and walleye. Both of these fish will hit many of the same lures used to catch bass, especially the small mouth. The sauger and walleye offer some of the best eating in the world. A lot of the guides on Kentucky Lake will try to catch a few of these fish for a shore lunch during the day with their clients. Shore lunches, which started in the Northern Lakes and Canada, have become popular in this area. Lake Weiss, located in Northwest Georgia, has been com pared with Kentucky Lake when anglers are talking about the Westfield Schools become the first school to open up the middle school season with a match against Tattnall in Macon Thursday. We didn't have deer or turkey to hunt in those days and quail season was the big day, which we antici pated as eagerly as Christmas . I feel sorry for any young man \fcho has never felt what it was like to trudge through the woods and fields with a handful of shotgun shells banging around in a coat pocket, the old Browning shotgun over his shoulder and a pointer birddog out in front of him trying his best to please his master. There is a beauty about the changing leaves, the fall smell in the early morning air, the golden broom sedge and the explosion of a tremendous crappie fishing. We have seen some of the crappie cran ing out of Kentucky Lake, and if it is anything like that in Lake Weiss, I don't know why anyone wants to waste their time in some of our other impoundments. Save your money and time, for good crappie fishing take them to Lake Weiss or Kentucky Lake. When you plan your next vaca tion and would like to make it one for great scenery as well as getting in some great fishing, Kentucky Lake should be on the list of con siderations. The drive there is through some of the most scenic areas of both Tennessee and Kentucky. It doesn't matter what your pref erence of lodging is since it can be found on the lake. As I mentioned earlier, one of the ways to enjoy the lake is to rent one of the house boats and just cruise where you want to. These houseboats offer all the comforts of home and much more. If you do decide to take a vaca tion to that area and want to know where some good eating places are that might not get advertised with the fine cuisine restaurants, give us a call. We'll be glad to let you know here some of the little places are which have the great food and atmosphere of a small country town. I guarantee you that you'll enjoy the visit and won’t go away hungry or to visit the ATM. Until next time . . . we've gone fishing.
