Despite running up against the
best two teams in the region and
getting crushed, Westfield softball

Sellers reminded people that he

but would be ready come tourna

Hornets' performance in the tour

three games to win the tournament,

Stephens also pointed out that

Panthers come in third in Jones Cty tourney
By VETO F. ROLEY

The Panther softball team found
themselves in an unusual situation
at the Jones County Tournament
Saturday. Despite a 3-1 record,
which was better than the second
place finisher's record, the Panthers
were only able to take home the
third place trophy.
The Panthers lost their first
match of the day to Jones County,
11-6, who would later beat
Washington-Wilkes, but lose to
Bleckley County. The Panthers
would go on to crush Bleckly
County 16-3 and dominate
Washington-Wilkes 9-4.
However, because of the earlier
loss to Jones County, Perry fin

teams still playing Oct. 5. "We
will try for our goal one step at a
time."
Sellers said that one problem his
team might be having was that they
were pressing. "We are trying too
hard. We need to be more patient
and relaxed up there."
Sellers said that there was a dif
ference between being eager at the
plate and being aggressive, with his
team being eager. "We are jumping
on bad pitches."
"We are still making too many
errors,” said Sellers. "But, it isn't
because we aren't trying.
"We are going to make young
mistakes. Nobody has got their
head down around here. I won't al
low it."

Britsky said the Panthers coming
back in the tournament after the
loss to Jones County, which was
marked by a five run Greyhound
rally in the sixth inning, breaking a
6-6 tie, was nothing unusual on the
season.
"We've never given up," said
Britsky, adding that even when the
team had lost games, they had not
given up in the game.
The story of the weekend was
the play of Katie McClintic, who

the tournament. However, the next
three games, McClintic provided a
good amount of offense, sandwich

County and Washington County.
More importantly than her hits,
were the time that McClintic chose
to hit. In the Bleckley County and
Washington County games,
McClintic collected 12 RBIs.
Other offensive stars for the
Panthers were Marina Culley, who
caused the bottom of the lineup to
heat up on the cold day with a six
for-ten performance. Pitcher Robin
Griffen continues to improve from
a sore ankle, finishing the tourna
ment with an eight-for-15 mark.
Britsky said the upcoming week

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
and a tournament in Tift on
Saturday.
