Page 8A Wednesday, September 14, 1994, Houston Times-Journal Woods 'ii water Tuggle hosts Ducks Unlimited I had my first experience with this years dove season this past weekend when I hosted the ninth annual meeting of Ducks Unlimited’s state officers. Sixty-five members of Ducks Unlimited met in Perry at the New Perry Hotel for a weekend of busi ness meetings, fellowship and dove shooting. I'm afraid that I furnished the at tendees more fellowship, food, and meetings than doves. The dove population seems to be down this year and the hunt for pay shoots arc making it harder and harder to find a good field for a shoot such as this. Granted, this tournament is not on the scale of the famous BASS Masters tournament; but, that would depend on who you are. This classic anc be compared with any other type of champi onship—football, baseball, if they have one, or tennis. The motivation is still the same, you want to walk away being the best of the best. It takes determination, a lot of hard work, a lot of skill and a good bit of luck thrown in to win a championship. In our case it took all of that just to get in the cham pionship. Susanne and I were not in the competition for die classic this year until the last tournament of the sea son. We knew we would have to win that tournament in order to qualify, and decided to go for broke. At die end of the tournament, we had accomplished what we had st out to do. By winning the last tournament, we were guaranteed a berdi in the classic. Now, the hard word, determina tion, and skill really have to work for us. I hear stories of shoots this weekend which quickly sold out at a price of SIOO to $l5O per gun for a two day shoot. The field that I had been promised was leased out from un der me for a higher price and I had to scramble around to find another field at the last minute. I finally managed to lease a field that had been shot the past weekend. Action on the field was slow un til late in the afternoon and just about the time that the doves started to come into the field, tor rential rains and lightning also came. Everyone starts at the same level. We have two-and-a-half days of practice and two days of competi tion. This particular time of the year, the weather is changing its seasonal pattern, which could make for some interesting times. I remember fishing one classic on Lake Demoplis, another river lake in Alabama. When we left home, the temper ature was a balmy 80 degrees. By time the tournament started, the weather had changed for the worst — it was sleeting and snowing on the first morning of the tournament. By the last day of the tournament, thunderstorms were rolling into die area. The DU officers started their weekerd with a meeting of the Marsh Committee held in Mellco ' s board room, Members of the committee met with Joe Kurz, Chief of Game Management of the Wildlife Resources Division. Steve Johns, DNR waterfowl biologist, gave a report on the status of marsh projects which are being con structed by Ducks Unlimited and bad weather. This isn't our first USA Couples Championship. After a meedng of the State DU Council, the members adjourned to the National Fairgrounds for the annual Perry Ducks Unlimited Banquet. Over SB,OOO was raised at this event for waterfowl conserva tion. The 65 members of Du met at the county Agriculture Building on Saturday morning for a full busi ness meeting and a barbecue before going to the dove field for an after noon of shooting. I promise myself, every year, that I will never host this meeting again. Planning a full weekend of meetings, fellowship, food and dove shooting for 65 to 70 people is not easy, but when I see the ded ication to conservation that this group has, I always change my mind. years we have been on the trail.
