Panthers, from 7A
The Panthers exploded for a
seven run second inning, taking ad
vantage of three errors and three
walks by Lanier to take the early 74
lead.
Gilbert led off the Panther fourth
with a walk. She was replaced on
first by Amber Fendley, who
grounded to short. A single by
Mamie Mills put runners on first
and second. One out later, Gilbert
crossed the plate as the Lanier
shortstop misplayed Robin
Griffen's grounder.
Lanier would storm back in the
bottom of the fourth with four runs
to tie the game.
In the top of the fifth, two
Lanier errors and a walk loaded the
bases with one out. Shipes drove
the ball to left, allowing Emily
Mathis to cross the plate for the
winning run.
The Panther defense did the rest,
allowing only one Lanier baserun
ner over the next three innings.
Perry would threaten over the next
two innings, but would be unable
to put any runs across the plate.
The Tifton tournament gave
Perry plenty of chances to play
tough games. In the fifth-place
game, the Panthers took on the
neighbors from Hawkinsville, only
to require extra innings to come
away with the win.
The game was a pitcher's duel

pitcher Kelley Mcßae, nursing a

Houston Lake Country Club tabbed in nat'l rating

Houston Lake Country Club re
cently found itself on a very exclu
sive list, a top-50 listing of
Georgia golf facilities in the state
of Georgia and being named one of
America's best golf courses by
Golfweek magazine.
"We've done a lot of work in the
last five-to-ten years," said Chris
Murman, president of Houston
Lake Country Club. "It's nice to be
recognized as one of America's best
golf courses. It's a nice distinction."
Murman said that the award usu
ally went to courses at exclusive
private clubs that had "big money."
"It's a little more difficult (for a
semi-private club to get the
honor)," said Murman. "It says a
lot about how this golf course is
thought of."

one-run lead, facing the minimum
of Perry batters through three-and
two- thirds.
However, Hawkinsville errors on
grounders hit by Shipes and Gilbert
gave the Panthers a chance to break
through in bottom of the fourth.
Amber Fendley singled to left-cen
ter to score Shipes and tie the
game.
Hawkinsville scored its first run
in the fourth. Allison Taylor sin
gled up the middle, advancing to
second on an error in the outfield.
She would go to third on Carrie
Trull's single down the third base
line and score on Jennifer Synder's
sac fly to left.
The Red Devils would take a 2-1
lead in the fifth with Misty Vaughn
singling to right with two outs to
drive in Holly Collins, who opened
the inning with a single.
Perry would manage to force ex
tra innings in the sixth. Mathis
reached first on an error by the sec
ondbaseman. An additonal error by
the thirdbaseman on Blount's
grounder put runners at first and
second. One out later, Shipes sin
gled up the middle. An error in the
outfield allowed Mathis to cross the
plate.
The game would end in the
ninth. Gilbert singled up the mid
dle. Amber Fendley singled to left,
with an error putting runners on
first and second. Mills received the
intentional pass to load the bases.
by Fryer with one out loaded the
bases.
However, the Hornets were able
to push only one run across the
plate on an infield single to third by
Barr. The other two outs were
recorded on an infield fly and a
grounder to third.
The split in the double header
runs the die Hornet record to 4-5.
was originally built in 1965, said
Murman. "It has stood the test of
time. It is well designed, well built.
They (the original owners) did a
good job."
The selection as one of the top
50 golf courses was based on over
all playability, course condition,
aesthetic value and shotmaking
value, said Murman.
"It's a fun place to play for pro
fessionals as well as the weekend
duffer," said Murman. "That's real
difficult to do; but, the design crite
ria built it that way.
"The course tests a good golfer;
but, the average golfer or beginner
can come out and it enjoy it. Most
of the top 50 golf course are almost
too difficult for the average golfer."
Murman said the design of the
Houston Lake facility was around
20 years ahead of its time.

Mcßae would get the next two
batters to fly out to center. The first
pop fly was not deep enough to get
Gilbert in; but, the second, by
Griffen, was, allowing Perry to
come away with the win.
Against Bleckley County, the
Panthers found themselves in an
other hole.
After scoring three runs on the
basis of Amber Fendley's triple in
the first, the Panthers watched their
bats fall silent.
The Royals used the period to
push across one run in the fourth
and three in the fifth on two dou
bles and a triple to take the 7-4
lead.
But, Perry would battle back.

intendent Scott Palmer and his crew
of 10 groundskeepers also had a
large part in the club's getting the
award. "They have to keep 200

People who come out and play

This is not the first time that
Houston Lake Country Club has
