Woods 'ii water Andels finish 21st in Ala. tourney Tony and Jan Parton of Talladega, Ala., won the USA Couples Championship. In fact, the Alabama Division took six to the top 10 places at Lake Mitchell. During the two and z half days of pre-practice, Susanne and I had found a couple of patterns that pro duced quality fish. One was fishing the grass beds Uiat were along the deep water drops, where a lot of other couples were also fishing, the other place was a 14 foot ridge about 150 yards long with 20 to 30 feet of water around it. We found this ridge on Monday and caught a couple of Uiree pound bass off it. We decided to leave the ridge lone until the tournament and concentrate on finding something different that would hold fish. We were unable to find anything different so we elected to fish the grass on the first day until we had a limit of fish, and then move to the Bobby Tuggle welcomes a fourth Tuggle When I was young, I always thought of a Grandfather as being a fairly old person. I really couldn't forsee the day that I would ever be that old. Now, all at once, my son and daughter have aged ine greatly, by making me a Grandfather three times in a period of two years. I have joined the nuiks of the aged. 1 wrote an article about my first granddaughter, Kathryn, at the time she was born. When my second grandddaughler, Meredith, was bom I was not writing and could not write an article about her. I could probably write a book about hew now, as she has lived in the house with Irene and I since she was born. We really were not prepared at our age, to have a new baby in the house, but Meredith has earned a special place in our heart. For some reason, she has been more fun than inv own children when they were babies. It seems that I have heard this from other Grandparents, also. Our latest gnuidchild is a boy and is my namesake, Robert Thomas Tuggle IV. I have given much thought as to what to say to a Hornets, from 6A an error, with Smith getting Biggers in on a single to center. Meanwhile, die Vikings started their run to tie llie game, scoring diree in the fourdi and three in die sevendi. The seventh inning saw FPD batters connect for diree dou bles, including back-to-back dou bles by Gitareau and Long to de die game. Smith paced the Hornet offen sive attack widi three hits. Biggers, Fryer and Barr had two hits each. Westfield 3, FPD 13 In the second game, the Vikings jumped on the Hornets early, using a two run homer by Boyett and two walks and two Hornet errors to take the early 5-0 lead. FPD would add one in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth to cruise to the sweep. However, the Hornets would fight back in the game. Hart would lead off the game for the Hornets with a single down the third base line. One out later Walker would rip a single to center. Fryer would get her fourth RBI of the day, grounding to second, but getdng Hart across the plate. After leaving the bases loaded in the second, the Hornets would sting the Vikings again in the fourth. A single by Smith would be fol lowed by a walk to Barr. Laura Posey followed with another single to load the bases. With the infield playing in to prevent a run, Stewart rapped the ball to short. However, Smith, who starred for the Lady Hornets' Thinclads last year, beat the throw home for Westfield's second run. Ashlee McCord followed with a sac fly to right for the final Hornet run of the afternoon. Westfield 8, Windsor 17 Early in the season, the Hornets played the Lady Knights, with the Lady Knights easily sweeping the series. On Thursday, the Hornets showed the Knights how much they had learned since the two tetuns last met. Although the Knights won the first giune going away, the Hornets were victimized by a nine-run fifth that saw them walk three Knight batters and commit five errors. ridge and try to catch larger fish. We had our limit of small bass by 10:30 a.m., and moved to the ridge. By 2 p.m., Susanne and I had culled all of die smaller bass and our weight was enough to put us into second place alter die first day. We felt that we had a strong shot of winning the classic if the weather would only hold back three or four hours. The last day of the tournament, die weather did not hold and we were faced with a strong east wind and a fast moving front which moved our fish totally away from our ridge. The fast change in a weadier pattern is die worst enemy of a deep water pattern. We had to change and try some thing else if we were going to hold on to second or, even, win. All day long we were able to catch non-keepers, but the 12 incher kept eluding us. Susanne finally grandson. There are so many tilings that you want to tell him, so much un needed advice to give and so many tilings that you want to show him and do with him. Reality creeps in when you real ize llie difference in your ages, and that when he is old enough to un derstand and do things with you, you may be too old or may even be gone. In this article I would like to write a letter to my grandson, Thomas. Dear Thomas, I hope that when you are eighteen years old you will read this article and letter and understand something of what I have felt at your birth. Hopefully, I will still be here to tell you these things myself, but if not here they are. You come from a long line of After falling behind 4-0 in the top of the first, the Hornets shocked the Knights by mounting a vigor ous comeback, starting the bottom half of the first. A couple of Knight errors and a fielder's choice left Biggers and Walker on first and second with two out. Smith started the comeback with a single to left, scoring Biggers, and McCord singled to center to plate Walker, cutting the Knight lead in half. The Hornets continued their joust with the Knights in the fourth. Proving that you don't have to hit the ball hard, Smith hit a Panthers, from 6A hang on for the 14-8 win, with West Laurens scoring seven runs over die last two innings of play. Andrea Duren would provide the key hits in die game, connecdng on two run homer in die four run first and a run scoring double in die sec ond. Fendley added a two run triple in the second, and Stephanie Andei had a two run single in die second. Macon County Invitational Perry 3, Aniericus 4 The Pandiers continued to have problems in the first game of tour naments, dropping immediately into die "losers" bracket widi a first round loss against Amcricus. Aniericus came up with two runs in die fourdi inning to Ue the game at two. The score remained knotted until the sixth inning. Shipes led off the the Panther sixth with a triple to center. Shanetia Gilbert followed with a sacrifice to center to give Perry the lead. However, Americus suuck back in the seventh scoring two runs with two outs on consecutive hits by Williams, Cindy Grot and Krislil Toll. Perry 18, Sumter Co. 1 The Panthers exploded against Sumter County, taking just three innings to dispatch the Rams. Duren had a diree run homer in the first to get die Panthers going. A nine run Randier second featured r 'YI > i% Gone O \ /Fishing ~ f K David and Susanne Andel caught a three-and-a-half pounder before weigh in. Our score die second day dropped us out of second and all die way down to 21st place. The first 25 places were so close dial any slipup meant disaster. Less dian four pounds separated Ist from 25th. Not being abie to catch even a small limit cost us in die end. Susanne did, however, win big bass for Thursday and nearly had big bass for Friday. Lake Mitchell is really two lakes in one. A single to left by McCord brought llie Hornets to within one. Barr followed with a double to right to give the Hornets the lead. The Hornets did try to answer the Knight's fifth inning onslaught with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Walker, Fryer and Smith drove in runs in the inning. However, instead of the Hornets drawing closer, it would be the Knights extending their lead, Amber Fendley's inside die park grand slam. The five run diird saw the Rams commit four errors and walk four batters. Perry 6, Macon County 3 Playing in the rain, it took die Panthers a little longer to dispatch the Bulldogs. Up 3-0 in die sixth, the Pandiers got some important insurance, scor ing three times in the sixth Westfield, from 6A sters in the last half. In fact, ten players carried the ball for the Hornets, with Davis picking up a team -high 78 yards on just four carries. Morton was close behind with 69 yards on seven carries, while sophomore Brian Staines added 54, Shepley 35 and Tim Allen 38 in a well balanced attack. Allen, the stinting linebacker, was used mostly on short yardage car ries, and the big junior scored two of the 1 lornels touchdowns. Another valuable statistic was llie number of snaps Jones was able to give sophomore Ben Uulbcrt at quarterback. Uulbcrt played more than a quarter at the signal-calling position, using Lance Bryant, Michael Williiuns, Jerry Horton, J.R. Moore and David Walker at the running back positions. Shane Nelson, die Trojans tail s back, had a game high 132 yards, tory. We opted for the largemoudi be cause of dieir overall weight per length over spotted bass. The win ning couple had mostly large mouth, as did second and third place. Even though we didn't come home widi die gold, we did come home with a little of the silver. Smith paced the Hornet offense with three hits. Fryer and McCord had two hits each. Westfield 4, Windsor 9 Buoyed by their performance in the first game, the Hornets came out in the second determined to gain the split. After holding the Knights in the top of the first, the Hornets struck quickly in the bottom of the in ning. After a baserunning mistake cost Kastina Nolen got the big hit, driv ing in Robin Griffin and McClintic. The diree runs were important, allowing die Pandiers to hold off a seventh inning Bulldog rally, when a double by Jennifer Campbell would bring Macon to widiin three. The Pandiers scored one in die second with Emily Madiis knock ing in Duren. They would add two most of diem coming on an Bi-yara run very late in die game when the outcome was no longer in doubt. After the impressive performance on the Trojans first drive, fullback Wall was held in check by the Westfield defense, which went to a six man front several times during die game. The win was career victory num ber 148 for Ronnie Jones, who should hit die 150 mark on die road at Til'tarea in two weeks. The Hornets travel to Camilla for a Saturday night meedng widi Danny Hayes' Westwood Wildcats, and play l ift area in Chula the next Friday.
