How to attract hummingbirds Hummingbirds are charming little aviators that can easily be attracted to your garden. The following are some tips from the Florida Nurserymen and Growers Association for coaxing them your way. The best way to attract “hummers” is to provide their favvorite nectaring blossoms, usually red in color. You will have to choose your plants carefully, however, for not all landscape plants are suitable for nectar seekers. The following are recommended for hummingbirds: coral bean, red star hibiscus, lantana, trumpet vine, coral honeysuckle, butterfly milkweed, red basil, cardinal flower, scarlet morning glory, cypress vine and standing cypress. It is best to plant a variety of species and to arrange these in several groupings. When nesting, hummers are quite aggressive and territorial around their food source, so having more than one flower garden will allow several hummers to feed at the same lime without conflict “Hummingbirds, due to their fast-paced lifestyles, must feed every 10 to 15 minutes from dawn to dusk,” according to Joe Schaefer, wildlife extension specialist at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. Hummingbirds will eat more than half their weight in food and drink eight times their weight in water,” he added. These can be made using one part white granulated cane sugar to four parts water (by volume). Heat the sugar solution to help dissolve the sugar and after it has cooled, pour it into a red feeder. It is not necessary to add red food coloring - the bird will be attracted to the red feeders. Sugar solutions must be kept fresh- Georgia’s hot weather can cause bacterial infections to develop in these solutions if they are left out too long. This can be fatal to the birds. Schaefer recommends that hummingbird feeders be placed where they won’t be in direct sunlight. Use sugar only. Using a sweeter solution than recommended above, a sugar substitute, or even honey might be fatal. Also, it is important that feeders be cleaned with hot water and white vinegar, never with soap or bleach., One more tip - if your feeder seems to attract more pesky ants than hummers, try greasing the hanging wire with vegetable oil. Hummingbirds are fascinating little feathered creatures. Good luck attracting them to your place.
