Phone firm
issues alert
Local telephone company has
issued an alert to Perry-area
customers about fraudulent callers
contacting customers requesting the
immediate payment of telephone
bills, over the phone, by credit card.
Additionally, the company has been
informed that some customers are
also being contacted by individuals
alleging to representatives of
various long-distance companies,
requesting verification of the
customer’s telephone calling card
number.
‘These calls are not generated by
Alltel or its representatives,” said
Skip Dawkins, area manager. “We
may contact customers about
delinquent telephone bills or to
inform customers about the
availability of calling features or
services in their areas; however, we
will never request immediate
payment by credit card over the
telephone, nor request verification
of a telephone calling card number
over the phone.” •
Dawkins recommends that
customers ignore all calls
requesting credit card or calling card
information, if received, and to
contact local law enforcement
agencies about the occurrence.
“Though always unwelcome, the
timing of these deceptive calls is
especially unfortunate, now,
because Alltel is in the midst of a
telemarketing campaign informing
customers about the availability of
new calling features,” he said.
Additionally, the company is
conducting a major records
verification project and service
improvement program that may
involve company personnel visiting
customer premises.”
Dawkins noted that
representatives working on the
costomer records verification project
will not request entry into a
residence- Their work includes the
physical inspection of cable pairs at
telephone poles and terminals, as
well as outside premises
verification of customer addresses.
