The commission also turned
down a request for a personal prop
erty audit from John Wingfield.
The contract, for $75,000, was
budgeted by the county in July for
the fiscal year. Wingfield told the
commission that the purpose of the
audit was to make sure taxes on
personal property were being col
lected property.
In all, the auditors were to audit
109 accounts in the county, check
ing on personal property. Personal
property taxes make up 15 percent
of the revenue gathered by the
county.
Wingfield said that the state had
suggested that the county conduct
the audit, noting that ova 20 coun
ties had audited or were auditing
their personal tax accounts. He
added that in each of the counties
that audited the accounts, the coun
ties made up the money spent on
the audits from increased tax re
turns.
However, the commission had
problems seeing why Wingfield
needed to bring in outside auditors
to do the audit when the county had
people on payroll who could do the
audits.
However, Wingfield said that the
county did not have any CPAs on
its payroll that could do this work,
and the auditors were CPAs.
Even though the request was
turned down, county commission
chairman Sherrill Stafford told
Wingfield to come back with a new
proposal, noting that the need for
the audit might not have been
communicated to the commission
ers.
The commission did not set the
occupational rate for the county.
The commission discussed five
proposals at their last September
meeting, saying they would decide
on a proposal in their October
meetings.
The next chance the commission
will have a chance to take up the
occupational tax will be at their
meeting Oct. 18, which will be
held at the Warner Robins Annex at
7 p.m.
