Sports Westfield tunes up for Stratford By VETO F. ROLEY Sport* Editor After two games where the starters for the Hornets were out for the evening at the half, Westfield coach Ronnie Jones was looking for some competition, for a game that forced his starters to play the entire game. And, Friday night against the Windsor Knights, the Hornets found the competition they were looking for, winning their first re gion game of the year 28-6, setting up a rematch of last year's state championship match with Stratford. Even though the "Hornets won by a 22 point margin, the Knights were still in the game until Tim Allen went over from two yards out for the final touchdown of the game for the Hornets with 4:40 left in the game. Undefeated Hornet By PHIL CLARK Sports Editor In 1974, Westfield was playing just its thrid season of football, un der Marvin Arrington, who started up the program in 1972. The Hornets of 1974 went 10-0 in the regular season, the only unbeaten regular season in the school's his tory. That team, twenty years ago, also holds the school record for fewest points allowed in a season. Special teams mistakes lead to PHS loss By PHIL CLARK Sports Editor Perry’s defense did all it eould do Friday night, but finally gave up a long drive to open the second half as West Laurens improved to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in region 3AA with an 18-0 victory at Raider Stadium. It was the special teams that did the Panthers in. On almost every punt or kickoff, the Panthers return peo ple showed a lot of indecision, often failing to field the kick, and putting the Panthers in a hole. Fact is, in a 3-0 first half, West Laurens gained just four yards total with just one first down, yet had a field goal to take the lead at the \ .Mill - jKBBgm mm m m Kiwaukee Thomas waits for a play from quarterback coach Tony Thrift. "We had a lot more intensity (tonight) then we've had in the last three-four weeks." Westfield received the opening kickoff and drove the ball down the field on the Knight defense for the opening score of the game. Early in the drive, Homet quar terback Matt Shepley misfired on two pass attempts, with Westfield gaining the ground they needed be hind the running of John Morton and Michael Davis. However, faced with a third-and-four from the 15, Shepley forgot about his early troubles and hit tightend Brian Nash up the middle for a seven yard gain. Brian Staines rushed for seven 79. That 1974 team, along with the cheerleading squad, will be recog nized Friday night during halftime at the Westfield-Stratford game. The g;une itself would be enough to fill the seats and the standing room, but the fact that this outstanding team will be honored will bring countless others to the game. Let's reflect a bit, to 1974. Can you recall this team? Can you re half. The Panthers' defense was stiffiing in the first half, stopping the talented running back Freddie Pooler almost in his tracks. But on the opening drive of the seocnd half, the Raiders, running out of an I-formation, pitched the ball wide to Pooler instead of trying to go up the middle, and the big senior re sponded with 54 yards in the 80- yard drive, with reserve tailback Navorro Evans taking it in the final seven yards for the first touchdown on the game. Whitney Alligood, who passed for 80 yards on seven completions, hit Pooler on a 14-yard scoring play in the fourth quarter to make it 16-0 after Casey Sirmons kicked the point after. But the Perry special H Houston Times-Journal yards to bring the ball to the one yard line. Allen got his first touch down of the night on the one yard plunge, capping the 14 play, 70 yard opening drive with 6:08 re maining in the quarter. Alex Gambill hit the first of four extra point attempts on the night, giving the Hornets a 7-0 lead. The next two Hornet posses sions ended on a punt and a fumble. And, the first Homet possession of the second stanza started out in a bad position, the Westfield five yard line. Jones used his fullback Morton to carry the ball twice, getting the ball out to the 23. From there, Davis took over, taking die ball the remaining 77 yards. With 6:13 left in the half, the Hornets had the 14- 0 lead. For the next 12 minutes of the team meets Friday member those outstanding players who made up the team? Let me help you. The offensive backfield was solid. In fact, it is one of the best all around backfields the team has had. Matt Mellette, the leading rusher and also the team MVP, was an outstanding two-way performer, also playing in the defensive back field. There was the fleet-footed David Bryant at running back. teams were still having troubles. Earlier, a high snap had aborted a field goal try while the score was still 3-0, late in the first half. And late in the game, a high snap on a punt sent the brill over Jason Brett's head and out of the endzone for a safety, the final points of the game in the 18-0 blanking. Tim Dixon, the second year WEst Laurens coach, was happy with the win. "We have four wins in the region. Last year we didn’t win a region game, so sure, it feels good." John Stephens, though, didn't have a lot to shout about. His defense played well except for the 80-y;ird march to open the second half. But offensively, West Laurens shut the Panthers down when they Richardson-Free Realty Announces Open House For Sunday, Octobei^6th 2:00 - 4:00 [ZTTjj 112 Lakeview Terrace Come see this lovely family oriented home! Windsor would hike advantage of the lull, scoring with 4:18 remaining in the third quarter on Denny Bryant's three yard run. The PAT failed, cutting the Homet lead to 14-6. But, the Hornets would quickly regain control of the game. In a march reminiscent of their first score, the Hornets would drive 59 yards in 12 plays, overcome a clip ping call that brought back a touch down and run 6:14 off the clock. Davis ended the drive with a six yard run for six on fourth down. The PAT made the score 21-6. "The offense and defense played hard," said Jones. "But, we still made a lot of mistakes."
