Winter is time for new gadgets
The new upcoming year, just
like all the previous, promises to
bring a lot of new equipment, im
provements on the old equipment,
and about as many new, guaranteed
to catch lures that it would take
several five gallon buckets to hold
them all. The fishing and marine
industry cannot afford to let any
new idea get by them because it
may cost them dearly in the end.
We have already begun testing
some of the newer spinnerbaits and
jigs coming out in January. To tell
you the truth, there’s not a lot of
difference in these spinnerbaits than
those made 10 or 15 years ago.
The main difference is the material
they are made of and the quality
control that goes into them. I truly
believe that the material and quality
control has made a better bait and
therefore increased our confidence
Panthers to beat Indians
The high school football schedule
this weekend is dotted with games
of monumental significance. For
example, in region IAAAA,
Valdosta will be at Colquit County.
Not only is this a game that will
decide first place in the region, it
also pits the two top teams in the
state in the Associated Press weekly
poll. Colquit County is number one,
Valdosta number two. The game is
being played in Moultrie. Both
teams are rebounding from disap
pointing seasons. In fact, Valdosta
missed the region playoffs last year
for the first time since 1975. But the.
'Cats are back, and so is the ’Pack.
It ought to be a dandy. My inclina
tion is to go with the borne team, so
Phil's pick is Colquit.
Central at Northside. Central has
won three games, but they have
played just two good football -
teams, and lost to both of them,
Lakeside and Warner Robins. Thev
play another outstanding team this
week in Conrad Nix's Eagles, who
are unbeaten and sitting atop the
2AAAA standings. Greg Manson is
probably the best running back in
this part of the state, and the Eagles
will turn him loose on the Chargers.
Phil's pick, Northside.
Lakeside at Warner Robins.
Lakeside is new to the region, mov
ing up from class AAA. They've
lost to Baldwin and play NOrthside
in two weeks. This stretch of games
will determine whether the Panthers
are serious challengers in the re
gion. They have already beaten
Central, so they look to handle the
Macon schools, but not those in
Warner Robins. The Demons fea
ture a strong defense, and their of
fensive team put up 27 against
Central last week. The Demons'
youngsters are coming around, and
they will be hard to beat from here
on in. Lakeside scores a lot of
points normally, but not tonight.
Phil's pick, Warner Robins.
East Coweta at Upson Lee. Two
of the four region 4AAAA teams
ranked in the AP top ten, and the
two teams that represented the
South sub-region in last year's
playoffs, each playing just its sec
ond year in AAAA. This game is
being played in Thomaston Each
team has lost to Forest Park, from
the North subregion, It's Danny
Cronic's quick wing-T against
Tommy Perdue’s big, bruising
ground attack. Go with the home
team. Phil's pick, Upson-Lee.
Wayne County at Peach County.
The Trojans were ranked number
seven preseason in class AAA, and
got up as high as number four in the
Bobby Tuggle's outdoor column
will return to this space next week.
It does not appear because of the
Fair, where he has his tepi set up.

Swainsboro, the Trojan's second
loss in a row (Worth County was
the other), and it could be what
Peach needed to get back on track.
Wayne is unbeaten and ranked
number 7, but they're really
untested, playing most of their non
region games against teams in the
coastal area, not your football
hotbed. It's the first region game for
both, and I look for Peach to re
bound. Phil's pick, Peach County.
Dodge County at Perry. Dodge is
3-1, Perry is 2-1 in region 3AA
after Perry's loss to West Laurens.
Dodge has lost to Mary Persons,
and still must face West Laurens, so
this is a big game for both teams as
they jockey for playoff positions.
It's almost a given that Mary
Persons and West Laurens will be
in the playoffs, with Dodge, Perry
and Jackson battling for the other
two. Perry has already beaten
Jackson, and I look for them to re
bound with a win at home. Phil's
pick^Perry.
Houston County at Pike County.
I'm beginning to wonder about

Over the years we have owned sev
eral different makes, and each one
had their good as well as bad
points. We have owned boats from
the more economical to the almost
too expensive.
It’s the same with your fishing
equipment. Someone come out
with a brand new rod designed for
cranking and endorsed by a pro and,
all of a sudden, everyone has got to
have one and they say it’s the best
rod they have ever used. Truth of
the matter is, this is the same old

ago that graphite replaced. A vi

football team. They've had lots of
injuries at Houston County, but
could that be the only problem?
After the Pike County game,
Houston faces Perry, Jackson and
West Laurens . But even at this
point, they've about played them
selves out of the playoff picture.
The Pike game will give them their
first region victory, though. Phil's
pick, Houston County.
Swainsboro at Tattnall County.
Number eight Swainsboro had an
impressive win over Peach County
two weeks ago, and even under a
new coach, the Tigers are looking
more and more like a valid double-
A challenger. Tattnall County could
be a big test, though. The team with
the unlikely nickname of Battle
Creek Warrior has lost just once,
and last week beat class AAA
Appling County. But even though
they're on the road, Phil's pick is
Swainsboro.
There are a couple of region 1A
North games on tap this weekend.
One of them pits the two
Montezuma schools against each
other, Macon County and D.F.
Douglass. Macon County is ranked
number two in class A, while
Douglass is struggling. This game
can be as one-sided as Macon
County wants to make it. Phil's
pick, Macon County.
Last week's 8-2 keept the season's
winning percentage at .783. We
missed the Houston County and
Jones County games last week.

On the other hand, there are fish

Both of us can catch a limit of fish

So, 1995 promises to be another
year of new. fantastic deals and fish

likely. I'll be just like everyone

Some people think a mature natu
ral forest is the "only” home for
woodlands wildlife.
The fact is, a mature forest’s
dense overhead canopy blocks
sunlight and stunts food growth
below. That’s not what a lot of ani
mals are looking for.
For many animals a vigorous
fast-growing, well-managed
Weyerhaeuser forest makes
a fine home.
There’s low-lying vegetation
and protective cover for small
mammals. Plenty of food for deer
and other large animals. Many
birds, too, thrive on the diverse
menu of our forests.
All of which means the habitat
is good for furbearers and other
predators as well.
The way our skilled foresters
care for our forestlands, there will
always be plenty of trees—and
homes for a wide variety of
wildlife—in Weyerhaeuser’s
forests.
Across America. And right here
in Georgia, too.
