Column designed to
help local veterans
with events, benefits
A veteran's information column
is not a new idea. Many places can
and do provide the same
information. Their difference here is
that these same places often do not
provide numbers, names or
addresses for problems that aren't
classified as simply medical.
Education and job training are only
tow of the other benefits that many
veterans are entitled to.
So in a two fold method, this
column will attempt to keep the
community aware of new
information, as well as, the
activities of local veterans
organizations; the American
Legion and the VFW.
The regular monthly meeting of
the American Legion, Post 24, was
held August Ist. The guest speaker
was Robert Turner, a past National
Commander of the American
Legion. Turner, who works
currently as a counselor at the VA
office in Milledgeville, had some
tips and advise for veterans and
their families.
Turner reminded the veterans
and their wives about the
importance of maintaining a copy
of a DD2I4 or other forms
necessary in proving service time.
This paperwork is important to
starting any claim with the
Veterans Administration. If you
have a DD2I4 you might want to
have it recorded at the Houston
County Courthouse. This would be
a permanent certified record.
Another state benefit is a free
driver's license for veterans of
Georgia and their widows. The
process has to have some service
record or a DD2I4. This is a sls
savings for veterans.
The Legion also held a
swearing-in ceremony for officers.
The Legionaires serving the POst
24 for 94-95 are: Commander Don
Norris, Adjutant Harry Bretz,
Chaplain Tom Mayo, Sargeant at
Arms Ben Parker, Finance Officer
Raymond Gornto, Service Officer
Earl Check, Junior Vice-
Commanders - Bill Kelly, Keiland
Harrington, Bob Thomas, Nancy
Hawk.
Post 24 is also proud of Larry
Miller and Harvey Voeltner for 50
years of service to the American
Legion.
The Radison Inn of Macon will
host a Regional Legion Conference
on October 22-23. 6th District of
which Post 24 is a member won the
award for 110% membership sign
up. If you are a veteran who wishes
to continue the strong tradition of
service to the community, God and
country, you can call 987-2901.
Here is an "all call" to remind
everyone of Veteran's Day, Nov.
11, 1994. This year's activities will
be held indoors in hopes of
increasing participation in this day
of honor. More details next month.
