Reward rich for those who live by His word
Dr. Marcus V. Tripp
Pastor. Perry United Methodist
Church
"They were talking about you in
Sunday School," he said as he came
in for 11 o'clock worship. And
from the smirk on his face, i
suspected they weren't discussing
how enthralling the sermon had
been at 9 o'clock.
It seems the teacher had said, “1
watched Marcus singing those
Campmeeting songs last week, just
sort of swaying back and forth to
the music. And I thought, "He sure
does look a lot like Forrest Gump!"
And I had always thought it
would be nice to be told 1 looked
like a movie star!
Now, I wouldn't dare tell you
who the teacher was. Especially
since her husband, David Pierce, is
our church Finance Chairman. And
she teaches my daughter biology at
the high school. And I have always
heard that teachers named "Susan”
can be very vindictive!
Church starts new building
Andrew United Methodist
Church has begun construction on
their Phase I, Building on
Blessings, project. The
construction contract was awarded
to South Construction Company of
Dublin, and preliminary excavation
work began on Sept. 29. The
project is expected to take about 18
months to latch-key completion.
Total cost will be approximately
$1,000,000, with the expected
value of the completed building to
exceed $1,200,000. Arrangements
have been made with the contractor
to use Volunteers in Mission
materials and labor whenever
possible. Word has gone out to
other United Methodist Churches in
the South Georgia Conference that
Andrew will be ready for volunteer
teams in 6-8 months.
Grants have been received from
the Macon District Board of
Missions, and the South Georgia
Conference of the United Methodist
Church. Additional funds have
been provided by The Bank of
Perry.
Andrew received recognition as
“Church of the Year”, Macon
District, in 1993-94, and was the
fastest growing church in the South
Georgia Conference last year. This
growth is manifested by the fact
that we started with one modular
construction building in August,
1992, when the original building
was declared condemned due to
termite damage; then we added
another modular building in 1993
for additional Sunday School rooms
and a place for our pre-schoolers
(Kid’s Kingdom) to meet.
Last month the church added
another modular construction
building because we had run out of
space again. This newest building
will be used primarily for our
Wednesday night supper gatherings.

BIG DIAMOND VALUE!

A lot of peple have made
"Forrest Gump" a very popular
movie. The title character is a man
with an IQ of 70 - not really
retarded, but certainly not bright.
He sits on a Savannah park bench
and pours out his story to anyone
who will listen. And those who
listen, like those of us who watch
the movie, seem to have been won
over by the kind simplicity of this
young man
Our family talked a lot about the
movie. Was the strange mixture of
fantasy and realism too strange?
Did the girl he so long admired
finally just use Forrest because she
was in a lot of trouble? But I'm no
movie critic. My interest is
theological.
Yes, I said "theological." That
strange and powerful Dane, Soren
Kierkegaard, wrote an entire
devotional book entitled, Purity of
Heart Is To Will One Thing. He
reminded his readers of Jesus'
present home in the three modular
buildings and then drive a wee bit
further to the pecan grove and see
our construction site. Andrew is
located on Georgia Highway 127
between Houston Lake and Moody
Road in Kathleen.
Worship services are held
Sundays at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Sunday School meets at 9:45 a.m.
There are youth meetings, choirs
and handbell groups for all ages.

words, "Seek ye first the kingdom
of God (heaven?) and his
righteousness, and all these things
shall be added unto you." "Anyone
who puts his hand to the plow and
looks back is not worthy of the
kingdom of God."
Simplicity and purity abound in
the soul of one whose whole life is
united in one great longing for
God's kingdom. Isn't it strange that
we can only imagine simple purity
in one who is not very bright?
Or perhaps it isn't strange.
Perhaps we know in ourselves that
our wits are exercised most
strenuously when we need to think
of a good excuse to do something
we know we shouldn't, or to get
out of something we know we
should.
Forrest Gump went far beyond
common sense in fulfilling his
promise to his Amy buddy, fatally
shot while standing by him in
Vietnam. His simple kindness
finally won his officer friend back
from the cynicism that engulfed
him after his crippling injury.
It took him to find genuine
fellowship in a church with persons
of a different race. And (if I should
win our family discussion) maybe
it even won over the girl he loved,
convincing her that when the chips
are down, purity of heart is worth a
lot more than all the false gods she
had lived by.
In the movie, Forrest Gump
earns a lot of money through his
simple kindess. But there is always
a rich reward for those willing to
live by Jesus’ words, "Seek ye first
the kingdom of God."
