Panthers control playoff destiny With the homecoming loss to Dodge County, the most important question facing the Panthers, with back-to-back region defeats and Houston County coming next Friday night, is where do the Panthers fit in the region schedule. After four weeks of play, Mary Persons and West Laurens stand firmly number one. The Bulldogs sport a 4-0 mark in Region play and the Raiders have a 5-0 mark. The two teams are scheduled to meet Nov. 11 in Dublin, and it could be a match between Region 3AA unbeatens. The Raiders still have two games on the region list before Mary Persons, Dodge County and Houston County, that will be tough games. And, the Bulldogs also have some tough match-ups before going to Dublin, meeting Perry here and Jackson at home, be fore the Nov. 11 dance date. But, however the season goes for these two teams, you have to assume that they have two of the region's spots in post season play. Dodge County, likewise, third in the region with a 4-1 mark, also seems to have a guaranteed spot for extra games. The Indians have three remaining games on their schedule, and all three pose some difficulties for the tribe from Eastman. Dodge will travel to West Laurens Oct. 28, sandwiching the road game be tween two home tiffs against Jackson and Houston County. But, looking at the remaining seasons for Perry and Jackson, the number four and five teams in the region, suggest that Dodge will play Nov. 18. One win would seem to guarantee it. Three teams in the region have only one win, and are just behind Gun deer season opens Saturday By VETO F. ROLEY News Editor Saturday might be a good day to stay out of the woods, as gun sea son opens. Gun season for deer will remain open from Oct. 22 to Jan. 8 in the south zone, which includes Houston County. There will be two either-sex, or doe, seasons, the fist season will open Oct. 29 and will last through Nov. 27, with the sec ond season opening Dec. 26 and lasting through the end of gun sea son. Despite a high harvest of 435,000 deer last year, the limit remains at five deer. Three of the five deer must be anterless, taken on either sex days. Westfield, from 6A simply outran everybody down tho sidelines for the score. After Alex Gambill converted the PAT, Westfield led 7-3, and that would hold up until the third quarter. Wilkins scored from two yards out with 8:58 left in the third. Wilkins had a 48 yard run in the drive. Terry made it 10-7 with the PAT. But, Westfield came right back on their next possession, using a John Morton burst of 40 yards to set up a short Shepley touchdown YOU MAY NEVER NEED A POOL COVER THIS SAFE But Think How Safe You’d Feel Owning One! None of these teams can lose again this season if they are to make the playoffs. Houston County will have the longest road of the three to the playoffs. The Bears will face Perry (home), Jackson (away), West Laurens (home) and Dodge County (away). If Houston County can make it through that gauntlet unde feated, then they deserve to go to the playoffs. Either Bleckley County or Harris County will be eliminated from any chance Friday night, when the two teams meet in Harris County. After Friday night, the Tigers have Pike County and Perry. Pike County is everybody's patsy, so the key game for Harris County, if they get by Bleckley County, will be the season finale against Perry—and that game will be played here. If the Royals happen to beat Harris County, they also get a break against Pike. But, the Tigers have a tough last two games. On Nov. 4, they entertain Perry before finishing the season at Jackson. It looks like Harris County would have the easiest long-shot chance at that fourth slot; but, that shot is fraught with dangers and is unlikely to happen. But, what about Perry? Deer taken in Wildlife manage ment areas that require hunters to check in and check out and tag deer with special WMA tags do not count towards the season limit. All hunters must pass a hunter's safety course before they are al lowed to get a license. Information about hunter's safety courses can be found by calling (912) 751-6415. This year marks the first time in several years that the deer herd has been under 1 million in population, with the Georgia herd being esti mated at just over 985,000 deer. However, wildlife experts expect the year to be a good season, with excellent food stores for deer and a large fawn population coming to age. The point after by Gambill put the Hornets ahead 14-10. Stratford's winning drive was capped off by Wilkin's 25-yard touchdown run, setting the stage for the last second heroics that fell just yards short. Eagles head coach Rodney Collins said, "I think we'll meet them again." Ronnie Jones replied, "I hope so." Westfield meets First Presbyterian Day Friday night in the homecoming game, with kick off at 8 p.m. at the Hornets' Nest. LCDP- LQC iu No Compromise*. No Excuses' MOOT ioc iw; Veto F. Roley Well, it looks like the first three slots have been decided, with my projected finish of Mary Persons (projected 8-0), West Laurens (7-1) and Dodge County (6-2). I think the Panthers will close out the season with three wins in the next four games. Perry could beat Mary Persons, after all Vandy beat Georgia; but, I think that is very unlikely. Perry should at least win two of the next four. Because of that, I don’t see the Panthers finishing any lower than fifth, and believe that they will wrap up the fourth place slot with either a win against Bleckley County or Harris County. Bleckley County, Houston County and Harris County will fight for sixth, seventh and eighth Pike County will finish 10th in the nine team region. And, that leaves Jackson and Perry to fight for the last playoff slot. The key game in the region for the Panthers may have been Sept. 30, when the Panthers defeated the Red Devils 21-14 at the Panther Pit. Although both teams are tied at 2-2 in the region standings, the Perry have the first tie breaker. In order to overtake the Panthers, the Red Devils must win one more game in the final three games than Perry. And, Jackson has to travel to Eastman to play Dodge County and Forsyth to play Mary Persons. Their two home games promise to be tough as well with Houston County and Bleckley County call ing. What was is, and never can be changed. The Panthers had a chance to take die season in their hands. And. that chance remains. Perry is very much in the driver's seat for a Nov. 18 game. * * * Ok, Panther fans. I understand the Fair was in town, and I understand the clouds were in the sky, and I understand it was a little chilly, and I even under stand that last year's GISA AAA champion Stratford was in town to play last year's GISA state runner up Westfield in a long-awaited re match. But, it was also HOMECOMING ! So, where were you Friday night? Looking at the evidence of the empty seats, I know that most of you were not at the Panther Pit. Yes, the Panthers will not win a state championship this year. If they do, it will be an amazing story. But, Perry is not a bad look ing team, and they need your sup port in the stadium, in the seats.
