The City is offering a rebate program that will pay $l5O to gas customers who convert their electric water heaters to natural gas waterheaters. Harold Deal, the city's utility supervisor, explains why gas water heating is an attractive proposition for customers and the city. "Our natural gas system is used at its peak during the winter months when heating requirements are at the highest. Gas water heating offers the solution of year-round gas load and better use of the City's gas system. The customer benefits because of savings through much lower energy bills." Deal continues, "One need only look at appliance "Energy Guide" labels required by federal law to notice the difference in operating costs." The city has special brochures that feature a sample energy guide label comparing the cost of operating an electric water heater vs. a gas water heater of comparable size and capacity. According to the labels, the annual cost to operate the electric water heater is $421 while the annual cost to operate the gas water heater is $157. The difference is $264, which adds up to $2,640 in savings over ten years. Deal also offers details about the rebate program and explains how to be eligible to collect $l5O. "The program is really simple. Many of our gas customers currently use electricity to heat their household water. We're so convinced natural gas is the best energy source for heating water, we're willing to assist financially in the conversion. Right now, when a customer converts an electric water heater to a natural gas water heater, we'll write you a check for $l5O to help cover the cost. " Rodney Dill is the local sales representative for the Municipal Gas Authority of Georgia, the organization helping to sponsor the Perry rebate program. According to Dill, the city will begin distributing information bags to its gas customers. These bags will contain information on the benefits of natural gas water heating and details about the rebate program. "We're doing our best to get the word out," Dill says. "We feel that this is an effective way to get all the necessary information into the customers' hands, we hope to help as many customers as possible with this program. People are surprised to see how easy it works and how easy it is to pick up a check. When you add the $l5O in cash to around $250 a year savings on energy bills, the conversion means that families can save S4OO the first year. We've even found in cases of older electric models first year savings totaling over $500." Dill says the program means more than saving money. "Our largest response comes because natural gas appliances usually provide a pay-back period. In fact, because the cost of natural gas is lower than the cost of electricity, conversion to a natural gas water heater will provide a quick pay back, normally within two years." Dill adds, "Gas water heating also offers a quicker recovery time, meaning there will be more hot water available for household needs. Another tremendous benefit is that during an electrical power outage a natural gas water heater continues to supply hot water. That's a comforting thought on a cold winter day." According to Harold Deal, "As we progress toward winter, the demand for gas service will be at its heaviest. Now is the best time to schedule all types of gas hook-ups and installations." Deal says the program is a limited time offer and that those who are interested should come by the utility department or call 987- 1911 for more program details.
