Local candidates for post share views on education By VETO F. ROLEY Staff Writer Five candidates for the Houston County Board of Education have qualified for three races in board elections on Nov. 8. The posts up for election this year are Post 2, Post 4 and Post 6. However, Post 2 and Post 4 are lo cated in Warner Robins, with Post 2 encompassing the Northwest por tion of the county, and Post 4, the minority district, east of Post 2, but west of Robins Air Force Base. Post 6 which is an at-large post, will be the only post contested in Houston County. It is also the only post that has multiple candidates seeking the office. In Post 2 in cumbent Gary McClure is running unopposed, and in Post 4 Fred Wilson is unopposed, seeking his first term on the board. Post 6 will feature a three-way battle between incumbent Shirley Lowery and challengers Randa R. Parker and Thomas Whitten. Lowery has served in the board for four years, and is the husband of Dr. C.B. Lowery, who served on the board for 12 years. "I'm running because I fee! that 1 can represent the children of Houston County well,” said Lowery. "Education is my life, and I think that I am very knowledge able to make decisions along that line." She has three children, Benjamin Lowery, Susanna Lowery and Johnny Lowery. "All three went through the public school sys tem," she said. "We are not coming out and preparing the students for the world," said Lowery. She added that there were many problems, and some that the school system could not solve, Nit it had to do a better job of prep, ing students for the world. Another problem faced by the school system was keeping up with technology. "The technology keeps changing so fast," Lowery said, "and that becomes a problem." "The breakdown of the family is affecting the child’s ability to func tion in the school system," Lowery said. Randa R. Parker Parkef said that she had been thinking about running for the board for four years. "The time is right," she said. "If feel like there needs to be more parental involvement," Parker said. "I feel like if I am on the board, I can help involve more par ents." Parker is the executive secretary at C.B.&T.
