Deer harvest may break records
After a week and a half of deer
season, it appears that this may
turn out to be one of the best sea
sons ever
I have never seen an acorn crop
like we have in the woods this year.
All of the oaks, including the white
oaks, are full of acorns and the
ground under them is solid with
acorns. This follows a record soft
mast crop this past summer so deer
are in excellent shape.
I spent some time in the woods
last Saturday morning and was sur
prised to find a profusion of buck
scrapes everywhere.
I have talked to several hunters
who have seen bucks running does.
One successful hunter was Tom
Ross of Perry. Tom was hunting
on a private tract of land near Mar
shallville last Friday afternoon
when he took a five point buck that
was running a doe.
On Sunday afternoon about
5:15, again. This time
on an eight-point buck that had a
live weight of 203 pounds. Tom
was hunting over buck scrapes
when the buck came out of the
woods and started working one of
Buyer beware when boat shopping
About now, all of us who fish
more than we hunt have ran out of
anything to do except the "honey
do's," which we try to overlook.
So, what a better time than now
to start looking for that new boat
you've been wanting to buy. While
it sounds easy, there is nothing
easy about it.
It hasn't been that many years
ago when the choices of boats were
limited. If you wanted to be
frivolous, you went out and bought
a yacht and called yourself a fisher
man or a water skier. Those of us
who could not afford to be frivolous
settled for a runabout, a bass boat
or a plain old fishing boat.
There was nothing in between
the yatch's and bottom-line boats.
Now, you have to be pretty certain
of what you intend to do with (his
rig before you even start looking
for it.
Don’t make the mistake of going
town to the local friendly boat
dealer and tell them that you want
the best boat they have to offer.
What you will bet is probably the
most expensive, biggest monstros
ity of a boat that is totally unusable
on a lake, unless that lake is called
the Gulf of Mexico.
Today, you better do a lot of
homework before you go the local
boat dealers. Boat dealers are like a
lot of car dealers today and in the
past. If you ihink you've heard talk

It was one of those bazaar nights
made for trick or treating as the
Hornets and Raiders exchanged
turnovers all night, with die Hor
nets losing four fumbles, while in
tercepting Reeves three times and
recovering one Raider fumble.
It wasn't until the last halt that
the Hornets finally got their ground
attack going, as the Raiders held
them to just 52 first half rushing
yards. A lot of that had to do with
the Hornets inability to hold onto
the ball, however. John Morton's
24 yard touch-down scamper in the
third quarter ended the scoring on
this weird looking Friday night as
the Hornets claim second place in
region lAAA and will host the

now, that looks like Brookwood,

the scrapes. A well-placed shot
with his 308 rifle put the buck
down for keeps. The buck’s antlers
had a 16 1/2-inch spread. Both
bucks were in excellent shape with
an abundance of body fat.
I talked with Troy Windham of
Artistic Taxidermy Studio this
week and he said that they had al
ready gotten in 65 deer to mount in
the first week of the season. This
is up about one third over last year.
This is a good indication of a record
kill.
Windham also said that the deer
were extremely fat. When the deer
go into the winter in this kind of
shape, they will usually have an
excellent breeding season, and antler
development should be outstanding.

about high pressure and the best
deal in the country, you ain't seen
nothing yet!
Buying a rig today has to be
considered a major investment, just
like buying a new car or truck. The
costs have gone up so much each
year that a new boat now costs in
the tens of thousands of dollars.
Right now, a complete rig costs a
lot of people the same amount as
they paid for their first homes.
When you make that trip to the
dealer, you had better go with all
the particulars you are looking for,
including the price range you .are
willing to pay.
Here are a few lips that we use
when looking for a new rig. Maybe
by substituting your requirements
in place of ours, you can get some
kind of idea of how it works today.
First, we design all of our re
quirements around tournament fish
ing, since this is our primary type
of fishing. We want a boat that can
handle extremely rough water
safely, have the horsepower to get
us to our fishing area and back in
the minimum amount of time, have
would take a Westwood win over
SW Georgia and a Brookwood win
over Deerfield to change the stand
ings.
Westfieid will play a non region
game Friday night against Adiens
Christian at the Hornets’ Nest.
Athens Christian is 5-4, but just 1-
3 in region 2AAA. They did beat
Monroe Friday night, though, and
come in on an emotional high, hav
ing captured a playoffs spot with
that win.
Westfield fans will have their
eyes trained on the Mount de Sales
and Tattnall Square game at Tattnall
Friday night. The winner will be
the region 2AAA champion, and
will be placed in the same bracket
with Westfield for the playoffs. By
the way, even though Westfield and
Stratford and now in the same re
gion, they can meet for the state
championship again this year if
both advance, since they finish one
two in their region and will enter
the playoffs in opposite brackets,
setting up the possible state cham
pionship game rematch.

Indications are that deer season will be very good this
year, both in numbers and size.
quail benefit from
the abundant acorns, hickory
nuts and beech nuts.
Even the predator species, such
a lot dry storage as well as a total
live well system, have all the ac
cessories that we need and be able
to carry enough fuel on board to
last a full day of hard tournament
fishing without having to stop to
refuel.
I fully realize that most people
are not looking for a package this
extreme; but, it is what it hikes in
today's tournaments.
Some of the things that you
want on your rig may be just as
elaborate in your mind as our rig is
in ours. This is the reason so many
different types of boats are being
manufactured today. The boating
industry has gone to great extremes
to supply the market with every
conceivable package. And, if you
can't buy what you want, they will
build it for you.
I offer these suggestions before
you visit the first boat dealer. First,
sit down with several magazines,
catalogs or anything else that has
picture of different rigs. Study them
over, and try to imagine what type
of water will you fish in, how

something else to stall play. It

of course, are the losers. They are

much storage do you need, do you
need aluminum or fiberglass, how
much horsepower, who is going to
use it, and how much am I willing
to pay.
Next, make up a list on paper
with all the equipment, down to the
last screw, that you want on the
rig. Don't list any name brands,
since the name brand doesn’t mean
nearly as much as it did in the past.
Make several copies of this list,
and give each of the local dealers a
copy. Ask them to fill in the
blanks with their best price.
Compare prices and equipment.
With this, you can make a pretty
good determination of the price
range of a good rig for you.
If you are looking for a particu
lar brand name, then you will have
to pay the price for that brand. Ei
ther way, you'll get a good idea of
how much money you will invest.

hold season tickets. The fan is also
the loser with increased ticket
prices, parking fees, absurd conces

which the kids insist on having
when they attend a game, and
rightly so. It's just hard to afford a
game anymore. Do the players care?
Not at all. Do the owners care? Ap
parently not. The average salary of
a major league baseball player today
is over one million dollars a year.
And most of them are not even
bonafide major leaguers. Just play
ers who happen to be playing on
the major league level.
