Parker. She has one daughter,
Michelle, who is a student at
Georgia Southwestern, and a son,
Joey, who is in the 7th grade at
Perry Middle School.
While Parker says the school
system is a good system, she says
there are "problems in the schools
that need to be taken care of.” One
problem she mentioned was that
students who disrupt the classroom
need a place to go to allow those
who want to study to study.
Parker also said that the board
meetings needed to be changed to
night to give parents and teachers a
better chance to attend the meet
ings.
Tom Whitten
Whitten said that there were four
reasons that he was seeking Post 6
on the school board.
"I think that we are very fortu
nate in Houston County to have an
excellent school system,” said
Whitten. "It's not because of dissat
isfaction with the education system
that I am running."

Whitten said the first reason that
he was running was that he was a
parent. He and his wife, Kimberly,
have two children, Michael, who is
a student at Perry Elementary, and
Christopher, who is four. "I am
concerned with anything that has an
input into their future," he said.
Whitten said that he was not
coming out of the woodwork, hav
ing served as PTC co-president at
Perry Elementary School, and hav
ing participated in several fundrais
ing activities for the school.
The second reason Whitten said
that he was running for Post 6 was
that he was "encouraged by a great
number of people" to seek the
school board. He said he chose Post
6 since it was the only post open to
a resident of South Houston
County in the coming elections.
Whitten said the third reason he
chose to run this year was that he
was a product of public education.
"I believe very strongly in the prin
ciples of public education," he said.
"It is a major factor that made this
■ Term limits for all members of Congress
■ Truth in sentencing to keep criminals and drug
dealers off our streets
■ Workfare - not welfare
■ Protect gun ownership rights
■ Family and middle class tax cuts
■ Protect our vital agriculture and defense jobs

country what it is today."
The fourth factor in Whitten's
decision to run for Post 6 was that
he had a leading role in the
Concerned Citizens of Houston
County group that tried to get the
board to build one of the two new
middle schools south of Highway
96.
"If someone takes a position to
criticize what something that
someone else has been doing, he
should be willing to to volunteer
his services," said Whitten.
Whitten noted that the county
commission's budget was $22 mil
lion for fiscal year 1995; but, that
the school board's budget ap
proached SBO million. "I feel that it
is important as a parent and tax
payer that these funds be spent
wisely and in the best interests of
our children," he said.
Post 6 is an at-large post, mean
ing that the entire county will vote
for the post. Whitten and Parker are
from Perry, while Lowery is from
Warner Robins.
