New program
at Morningside
helps children
If you haven't noticed lately that
Morningside Hleincntary has
grown, then it's time you did. The
new kid on the block at
Morningside Hleincntary is the Pre-
Kindergarten Program.
If you think that this is just
another program funded by lottery
money, you are only hall right.
The program is funded by lottery
money: however, that is where the
resemblance ends. It is definitely
not "just" another program, but a
program for children and their
families. Let me guide you on a
tour of the Pre-Kindergarten
program. All aboard?
Houston County's Pre-
Kindergarten Program is a
voluntary program for lour-year-okl
children mid their families designed
to implement National Goal 1):
"All children in America will st;irt
school ready to learn." Three
components of the goal are: 1) to
provide quality early childhood
programs, 2) to recognize that
p;irents are a child's first teachers
and 3) to promote health and
proper nutrition for children and
their families.
Unlike many other programs,
the Pre-Kindergarten Program
requires the formation of a
Coordinating Council among local
agencies to provide services.
It shares the responsibilities in
the development of the program
application and the establishment of
collaborations to provide available
services to children and their
families. Acceptance in the
program is by application.
The principles of the program
are based on developmentally
appropriate practices exposed by the
National Association for the
Education of Young Children and
the High/Scope education approach
High/Scope advocates active
learning and a child-centered
environment
There are six classrooms, two of
which are at Morningside. with 15
students per class Six certified
teachers mid paraprofexsionals work
with ‘K) children in the entire
program Extended day services are
offered also
Parent involvement is the key to
the Pre-Kindergarten program. The
f amily Service Coordinator acts as
a liaison between the social service
agencies and the family. She/he
works with the entire family to
promote adult literacy, health, mid
job training. Through home visits
by the Family Service Coordinator,
parent education classes and
opportunities to volunteer in the
class, parents are becoming actively
involved in the education of their
children.
On any given day at
Morningside Elementary you may
see parents participating in CAPA
Time-child and Parent Activity
Time, (during this time parents
work with the teacher and their
children on various activities in a
win. win situation). Many of the
parents accompanied their children
to the health department for their
child's required health check.
Parents are playing a major role in
the Pre-Kindergarten Program.
Perhaps this is the best boost to
education that we have had in a
long time.
Yes. there is a great deal of pride
at Morningside Elementary as the
Pre-Kindergarten program takes its
place among the other programs.

tor.
An east-side porch allows resi
dents to enjoy the beautifully land
scaped grounds. It is surrounded by
flowers, shrubbery, pot plants and
is decorated for Thanksgiving.
Four residents have already
moved in and are enjoying this
lovely facility featuring a large liv
ing room and dining area which ex
tends from die east side to the west
side of the building.
A privacy fence has been in
stalled across the east side of the
grounds in accordance with a City
ordinance.
The staff includes two full
time employees, plus Todd
Barker, full-time, and L isa part
time, since she is also a nurse at
die Perry Hospital. Since dicy live
in the facility, she, too is avail
able a majority of the time.
A physical therapist from
Three Rivers Home Health makes
three visits per week and as
needed. The residents also enjoy
planned activities.
Todd and I .isa are looking toward
expanding die business.
