Sports Westfield opens '94 playoffs with shutout By PHIL CLARK Sport* Editor The Westfield Hornets advanced to the quarterfinals of the G.I.S.A. AAA playoffs with a 34-0 whip ping of Brookwood Friday night. The GISA playoffs began around the state Friday night, and as ex pected, the pretenders were separated from the contenders. Using a play off format that pairs number one teams against number four, and three against two, all of the first and second seeded teams won open ers as the GISA pares down to the final eight. Actually, Mount de Sales got the jump on the others, playing their opener on Thursday night because of stadium use by GHSA Central and Southwest Fri day night. Brookwood came in just 5-5 on the year, but had played region 3A-A number one seal Deerfield to the wire last Friday before losing 17-14 in overtime. But the War riors, who boast one of the best running backs in the GISA in For rest Home, never got untracked against the relentless Westfield de fense w-ich gave up just 6.3 points all year, a new school record. Fact is, very little worked for tire War riors, held to 42 yards rushing and 45 through the air on four of twelve passing. Meanwhile, the WEstfield of fense did what it docs best, control the ball with an array of running backs, and an occasional pass from Matt Shepley. The Hornets broke the scoring ice midway through the first quarter as John Morton capped .• Kg ■ jJ«Mfcj^RK^gj\s * M ‘4l BMhfflUlr ” ■TB'" wllßpk ~ fj|. ROLEY News Editor Perry had to beat Harris County Friday night to keep alive any hopes they might have had for post season play. With just over 20 seconds show ing on the clock, it appeared as if the Panthers had done all they could do, leading 37-30. An unsportsman like penalty call on the Tigers and two sacks by Cheronskee Johnson had moved the ball back to the 28 yard line, where Harris faced a fourth-and-goal. But, it was not to be. Reaching down to die bottom of their bag of tricks, the Tigers pulled out a play for just such occasions. Quarterback Calvin Hamler hit Brad Johnson on a screen pass. Hamler then pulled up and found Ryan Ruall all alone in the endzone for six. Hamler then put the ball in the endzone for tire two point play, giv ing the Tigers the win 38-37. The Panthers would have one last shot at winning the game; but, that fell short as Kiwaukee Thomas was sacked by Jonathon Carter. In high school football, a team can throw as many forward passes as it likes as long as the ball re mains behind the line of scrim mage, making the play against Perry legal. "Everybody is so desperate to stop the thing," said Perry Coach Please see Panthers, page 7A a scoring drive with a one yard plunge and after Alex Gambill added the extra point, the Hornets led 7-0, with 6:04 left in the initial period. But it stayed that way as Brook wood tried to make a game of it with defense. Then with just 1:23 left in the half, Michael Davis broke open around the Brookwood 20-yard line and bolted into the end zone, a 28-yard scamper that would give Westfield a 14-0 halftime lead. Matt Shepley ran a bootleg the final two yards on WEstfield's first possession in the third quarter, cap ping off the drive that left Westfield in control of the game, with 9:56 left in the third quarter, running the score to a comfortable 21-0. The Hornets would score twice more in the thrid quarter, on a one yard run by John Morton, his sec ond score of the game, and on a 29- yard burst by fullback Tim Allen, whose touchdown run came after WEstfield had muffed two consecu tive Hal Hayes punts to allow Brookwood to keep die ball. Those were the only two turnovers in the game for the Hornets, though, in an odierwise flawless game. Michael Davis added to his team leading yardage total, gaining 82 yards on 10 carries, with one touch down. The fleet senior wingback now has 763 yards on 72 carries, a per carry average of just over ten and a half yards per carry. Morton carried 10 times also, gaining 53 yards, with two touch downs.
