Galleria mall won't hurt local businesses'
While Perry Chamber of
Commerce President Peggie
Williams understands the concerns
of Perry businesses, she said she
does not see the Galleria Mall draw
ing too many customers away from
Perry shops. The Galleria Mall in
Centerville opened to the public
Nov. 9.
"I don't see a tremendous impact
on local business," Williams said.
"I think people who support our
Perry businesses will support them
after the mall opens."
Williams said that people in the
area who shopped at malls were al
ready going to Macon, which is
just over 30 minutes from Perry.
She said that she would be much
more concerned if she owned a shop
in the Macon Mall than if she
owned a shop in Perry.
There could be a slight downturn
in business immediately after the
mall opened, said Williams, but
that could be attributed to people
being curious about a new thing.
She said once the curiosity went
down, shoppers would return to
Perry.
"Anything new, people go there
out of curiosity," said Williams.
Williams said that downtown
businesses could do two things to
mitigate the impact of the new
mall.

First, Williams said businesses
could stay open longer. She noted
that one of the reasons people went
to malls was that they were open
after regular working hours.
Secondly, area stores could em
