Panthers'
basketball
players take
honors at
tournament
Carl Thomas took his show on
the road, even before he showed it
off to the homefolks as the
Panthers participated in the
Hardee's-Coca Cola Thanksgiving
tournament in Jonesboro,
Tennessee. The Panthers did well,
top, taking runnerup honors
Saturday, losing to tournament
champion Sullivan North 78-60
after trailing by just two points,
36-34, at halftime.
In their opening game Perry beat
Volunteer 70-59 with Garriet Curry
and Cory Duncan leading the way
with seventeen each and Rod Barnes
chipping in with 15. In the semi
finals, Perry handled Sullivan East
79-71 after trailing by as many as
fifteen points in the first half. The
Panthers were down 26-9 at one
point in the first half, but took
control of the game toward halftime
.and advanced to the finals with an
eight-point win. Stan Gann and
Derrick Webb were the scoring
leaders in this game with 19 and
16, respectively, giving the
Panthers five players who scored in
double figures over the first two
games. Gann had three treys, and
Webb two in the comeback win.
In the finals, Sullivan North
improved their record to 4-0 with an
eighteen point win over Perry, 78-
60. The score at the half, though,
was just 36-34, but Sullivan took
charge in the second half. Curry led
the Panthers again with 26 points
and was named to the all
tournament team, along with Gann.
The homefolks get their chance
to see the Panthers in action as they
have a couple of games coming up
in the Panther Pit. On Saturday
night. Perry will host Mays of
Atlanta, a region 7-AAAA school,
while the Macon County Bulldogs
will be in town on Tuesday night.
That is unless the game is
postponed since Macon County is
still involved in football playoffs.
At press time Coach Carl
Thomas was a little under the
weather and resting at home, so we
weren’t able to contact him for
comments, but he must be pleased
with the efforts of his team, since
all five starters are new to starting
roles, with only Gann and Curry
gaining appreciable experience last
year, though Duncan and Webb as
well as Gene Arnold did play last
year.
