Freeport taxes abolished by city council By BRIGETTE LOUDERMILK News Editor Perry City Council unanimously passed a resolution to grant a 100 percent exemption on Freeport taxes at their regular meeting Tues day, Dec. 6. By abolishing the business inven tory tax, the city will lose approx imately $160,000 in the fiscal year 1996 budget. Councilman Hervia Ingram said the council would be meeting soon to review die new budget and the revenue loss won't result in a tax hike. "We'll have to amend some of the budget and make some cuts, but the Freeport exemption will not cause a tax increase,” Ingram said. Although the city will lose tax dollars, council feels die incentives for passing the exemption outweigh die lost revenues. "We passed the Freeport exemp tion to stay competitive. If we want to bring in jobs and improve the quality of life in Perry, we must open the door for businesses to lo cate here. Freeport will stand in die way of a company coming here," Mayor James E. Worrali said iast week. Local chamber President Peggie Williams is dirillcd dial die council lias followed in the footsteps of the county and Warner Robins in fully exempting Freeport. "We'll now be competitive with surrounding counties on Interstate 75 and we'll be on a level playing field with other areas. I'm happy to see the city take the initiative to do this. We liad a prospective industry in town Last week and Freeport was a major issue. We also need the ex emption for our existing industry, because the possibilities of expansion from this area can quickly make up for the income loss," Williams said. In other council business: •Council agreed to execute an agreement with Keck & Wood for engineering services on the New Hope CDBCi project and with As sociates in Local Government As sistance for administration of the pnijecl. •Council agreed to continue to contract with the Georgia Munici pal Association for telecommunica tion consulting services for the re mainder of die fiscal year. •Council approved die purchase of a used motor grader for the street department for $4,000 •Council cancelled their Dec. 20 meeting. Women educators group meet at New Perry Hotel On Saturday, November 12, 1904, the Alpha Lamtxla Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international organization of women educators, met at the New Perry Hotel. Members attending from Perry were: Fr.ye Doane, Emily Heaht, Van Rowell, Linda Loewen, Sue Lott, Kathy Shelton, Irene Tuggle, and Frances Worrali. The inspirational was led by Kathy Shelton. She shared "The Story of the Geese" widi the group. Members were asked to bring in items for nursing,home residents. The items were collected and will be distributed at Taylor County Nursing Home. The November program was conducted by the membership chairperson, Peggy 'Kendrick. It involved members completing biography forms for the chapter directory. Pictures wer also taken of the various county groups. The next Delta Kappa Gamma activity will he the Christmas Tea which was held Saturday, December 10 at the New Perry Hotel.
