Hutto keeps her 'end' of a bargain
By PAULINE LEWIS
Society Editor
Patsy Hutto, principal of Perry
Elementary School, recently
presented an unusual incentive to
her students, she encouraged them
to read 1,001 books within a
week’s time.
The children enthusiastically
picked up the challenge and decided
to read at least 1,001 books by the
following Friday afternoon.
Mrs. Hutto had previously sent a
leiter to the parents of her students
informing them of activities
planned for the 75th anniversary of
National Childrenn's Book Week
(Nov. 14-18).
She said, “Because reading is so
important, we hope these activities
will encourage children to read as
much as possible.”

In November, Perdue was chosen
Senate Majority Leader by the
SEnate Democratic Cacus. Majority
Leader is the second-highest ranking
elected post in the Senate. Perdue
previously chaired the Higher
Education Committee, but under
Senate rules top Senate officers
must relinquish chairmanhsips.
Perdue was recently reelected to
the Senate from the 19th Senatorial
District which includes Houston,
Bleckley and Pulaski Counties and
portions of Bibb County.
Children were urged to read at
least four books each during this
special week because Hutto agreed
to kiss a cow on Friday, if
collectively the student body could
read 1,001 books before the week
was over.
On Friday afternoon at 3:45
p.m., Nov. 18, Mrs. Hutto was
informed that the children had read
2,979 books within the one-week
period and she was as good as her

school has a vdeo of this mooo
