Steel shot takes some getting used to
By Ben Baker
Outdoors Writer
Waterfowl hunters who have never
used steel shot should take a few min
utes and a few shells and see what the
shot will do.
Steel shot is now required for all
waterfowl hunting in the United States.
Lead shot is not permitted for water
fowl like ducks and geese.
With Lake Seminole having its
first open Canadian goose season in
some time, a number of hunters will be
trying steel shot for the first time. For
more on the goose season, contact
your local game warden.
Steel does perform differently than
lead when flying out the business end
of a shotgun barrel. Taking aim at a
flying duck is not lime to find out how
it performs.
"One of the biggest problems con
sumers have in learning about steel
shot is they don’t know what happens
down range,” said Bill Wolh, spokes
man for Remington Arms and Ammu
nition.
A solution to this dilemma is pat
terning. Patterning a shotgun is not
widespread, except for turkey hunters
where shot pattern is considered ex-,
tremely crucial. If you stop to think a
moment, it makes sense to realize pat
terns are equally important when hunt
ing any kind of animal with shotshell
ammunition.
The pattern must be dense enough,
at a given range, to kill the intended
quarry. You can judge effective kill
ing ranges by patterning the shotshell
on paper targets.
“It’s something that generally isn’t
done,” Wohl said. “But, most people
who do it wind up being better hunt

Steel shot is more expensive than
