Panthers lose toughie to Bleckley County
By PHIL CLARK
Sports Writer
Ihe Perry Panthers dropped a
tough region 3AA South game to
the Bleckley County Royals last
Tuesday as Bleckley coach Benjy
Rogers did something he won't be
able to do all year. He played his
starters the entire ball game. Never
substituted one time the whole
night. He got away with it, though,
as the Royals held off a Perry rally
in the fourth quarter to escape with
a 73-70 victory.
Actually it was the first quarter
that did the Panthers in, as they
were forced to play catch -up ball all
night after Bleckley jumped out to a
21-12 first quarter lead behind the
shooting of the McNair brothers as
Tierre scored seven and Travis had
three treys few nine points.
Perry got to the foul line just
once in the first half as Bleddey
hung onto the lead at halftime
though outscored by the Panthers
16-15. Two baskets by Garriet
Curry, two by Rod Barnes, and
three pointers by Dejuan Lewis and
Stan Gann allowed the Panthers to
cut a point off the Bieckley lead.
The pace picked up in the third
quarter as Bleckley opened a 14-
point lead widi the first six points
of the quarter. After an exchange of
baskets, Perry had an unusual six
point trip as Curry, Cory Duncan
and Rod Bames had Panther baskets
before Bleckley could get the ball
down court, cutting the lead back to
eight at 44-36. The Panther rally
continued as Stan Gann hit a three
pointer, cutting the lead to five,
then got a steal and a basket to cut
it to three at 44-141, but Bleckley
built the lead back to five by the
end of the quarter at 50-45.
Perry had to try to catch up in
the fourth from the field, as they
got just five shots from the foul

cutting the Bleckley lead to four 56-
52, forcing a Bleckley time out
after they were charged with a foul
on a rebound attempt. Garriet Curry
scored on a leaner but Tim Ross
scored his first basket of the night
to make it 58-54. After a Perry
traveling violation turned the ball
over, the Panthers lost Duncan to
fouls at 4:04.
Tierre McNair's three pointer
gave Bleckley a 10-point lead with
three minutes left, 66-56, but Perry
wasn't done! With Bleckley leading
71-63, Gann hit a trey with 22
seconds left. 71-67! Then Derrick
Webb scored a three pointer. 71-70.
After a Perry foul to stop the clock.
McNair made shots to in;ike it 73-
70. Perry had one last shot to tie it,
though, as Gann tired desperately to
push the ball up court and get into
position for a three point shot. He
got the shot off, though double
teamed, but it dipped in and out at
buzzer as the Royals escaped with
the important sub-region victory.
Gann's 21 points topped the
scoring list for Perry, with Curry
knocking in 16, Duncan 10, and
Webb and Barnes nine each. The
McNairs did most of the damage for
Bleckley County, with Tierre
hitting a game high 31 and Travis
adding 18.

basketball I've seen in quite a
while. With both teams running up
and down the court at a furious
pace, punctuated by 26 trips to the
foul line, Milledge mounted a
remarkable comeback as they fired

meanwhile, could score just six

When the dust had settled, though,
Westfield had come away with the
victory, though it wasn't a pretty
one.
Nash had 22 Westfield points
while Walls had 21 and Rigdon 16.

four players in double figures, with
Shane Nelson scoring a game high

In the cutlines beneath the picture

name of Defensive Player of the
