Modern man needs lesson
By Rev. Harold L. Moore,
Pastor, Elko Baptist Church
“Let us hear the conclusion of
the matter: Fear God, keep His
commandments, for this is the
whole duty of man ” Keel 12:13.
The preacher in Ecclesiastes
apparently sees no good in
anything. “Vanity of vanities, till
is vanity “ is his recurring theme.
His work is pessimistic. He
searches for life’s true values. He
concludes that life is hardly worth
living and all human effort is vain.
His major thesis is dark fatalism
for man. At the end of life’ - brief
span death ensues to nullify the
value and worth of wisdom,
pleasure, labor and wealth. He asks.
“Why be bothered with the struggle
of trying to get ahead or of being
good?” The sun shines alike on the
rich and the poor, the bad and the
good. The ultimate end in either

case is the cold, dark grave. "Vanity
of vanities, all is vanity”, he
reiterates.
The preacher is looking at life
from the materialistic point of view.
He rejects the insights of divine
revelations. He flounders in the deep
sea of skepticism. He sees the
element of time taking its toll upon
the realm of natural substance,
man’s physical nature included. He
sees no value in all life’s strivings,
when its destiny amounts to nothing
more than the ash heap.
This attitude prevails throughout
the book to the last two verses.
Here he brings God into the picture.
Now he looks at life from its true
perspective. The purpose of his
major thesis is brought into sharp
focus. It has illustrated most
effectively the fact that LIFE
APART ' FROM GOD IS
MEANINGLESS AND VAIN..

accurate terminology to describe till
of life when God is left out.
Without God man can register no
real gains, achieve no permanent
goals, and accumulate no lastine
profits. Jesus said, "What shall it
profit a man if he gain the whole
world, and loses his own soul?"
Modern man needs this lesson
He thinks he has found value and
significance in material things, and
struggles to possess them. He tries
to make a life without God. His
efforts are vain, for one may aiave
everything else in life and not God,
and have nothing. How blessed life
can be when man “Fears God and
keeps His commandments”.
