Perry Panthers Keep Houston County Winless With 76-58 Win By: PHIL CLARK T-J Sports Writer It's been a long season for Cliff Hutto at Houston County as his young Bears have struggled through the first half of the season with a 0- 13 record. Perry's 76-58 Saturday night victory improved the Panthers to 9-6 overall, 2-2 in region 3AA South. The Panthers play at Albany Friday night and at Mays Atlanta Saturday afternoon, and don't return to region action until January 31st, when they travel to WestLaureas. Perry jumped on Houston County early and built up a 20-8 first quarter lead behind Derrick Webb's eight points, including two treys. Stan Gann also hit a long one, and Kiwaukee Thomas and Rod Barnes had two baskets each. With Bleckley county coach Benjy Rodgers watching from the stands, the pace really slowed in the second quarter; and Houston County crept back into it outscoring Perry 19-15, and actually closed to within three at one time, 28-25 before Perry increased the lead to six at the half 33-27. The teams battled through another sluggish quarter in the third, scoring; just fourteen points apiece as Perry held on to the six point advantage as Carl Thomas continued to shuttle players in and out of the game. Garriet Curry, who scored just two in the first half, began to take the ball inside and scored seven in the quarter to offset six by Chris Brown and five by Jon Bills for the Bears. In the fourth, though, with the scouts gone. Perry turned it up a notch or two, as Curry and Rod Barnes led a 29-point barrage to give the Panthers a relatively easy 76-58 win. Curry added eleven points in the fourth quarter to take team honors as four Panthers scored in double figures and Cory Duncan had nine. Barnes scored 13, including seven in the fourth quarter and Stan Gann had a dozen including two three-pointers. Flashy Dominique Robinson, who sometimes tends to showboat, sawed 20 for Houston County and the Bears got a dozen each from Bills And Brown. Cory Moore added nine. The subregion tournament will be played February 14-18 at the site of the regular season boys Lady Panthers third to give Perry its first lead at 20-19. Perry built the lead to five at 24-19 when Houston County called a time out with 3:44 left. Houston County's Erin Hatch got a steal and a basket to cut it to three, but with eight seconds left in the third, Gilbert scored on an inbounds piay to build the lead back to live after three quarters. Call it Jennifer Smith. Playing perhaps her best game of the year against the state's best team, Smith was unstoppable on the floor as she weaved her way through the Deerfield defense for 27 points. Nobody could stop Smith on ;this night. Not 6'3" Merideth Fordham. Not a double team using Tait Allen, and not even an occasional triple team. The only thing that slowed the splendid junior center was the toot of the officials' whistles as Smith was charged with two quick fouls in the first quarter, the second coming with 3:34 left in the quarter and Deerfield ahead 7-4. Billy Sellers took Smith out, but brought her back two minutes later and she responded with three free throws at the end of the quarter as she was fouled putting up a three point attempt. Deerfield led 16-11 at the quarter. Smith drew her third foul in the second quarter, but still put up eight more points, finishing the first half with 17 as Deerfield held on to a nine point lead at the half 32-23. Smith had all but six of her team's first half points. Fain Spurlock scored eight in the third quarter as Deerfield began to pull ahead of the Lady Hornets, leading by 17 after three quarters. In the fourth, with Westfield trying to catch up, Julee Fryer, Mary • Senior Citizens Discount • Free In-Town Delivery • Durable Medical Equipment • Computer Medical Records • Emergency Service • Complete Line Of Sundry Items YOUR FAMILY PHARMACY We Provide Printouts For Insurance Records And Income Tax Records At No Extra Charge. Mon-Fri 8:30-6:00 Sat 8:30-12:30 1036-A Macon Street, Perry, GA 987-2114 Katherine Walker and Stephanie Barr all fouled out, but not before Westfield had cut into the lead. When Fryer left with 2:22 to go in the game, Westfield trailed by just eight 54-46. Barr fouled out forty eight seconds after Fryer, and Walker went out with 1:15 remaining. Deerfield won it 60-48 to improve to 14-0 for the season, but it wasn't as easy as they would have liked. Billy Sellars said "we still have growing pains. We still make too many ball handling mistakes, but we're still growing. We still have growing pains."
