Walker proposes urban study
State House Majority Leader
Larry Walker, D-Perry, has won
approval of a proposed blue ribbon
panel which will focus on issues
and concerns affecting Georgia
cities.
The measure, which has passed
the House and awaits Senate action,
would create a 30-member panel
composed of General Assembly
members, private citizens, and local
county officials.
According to the legislation
calling for the study, Georgia's
economic future is intertwined with
the health and well-being of the
state's cities and counties. Like
other communities across the
nation, Georgia's cities and counties
face a staggering array of economic,
capital, environmental, and
governmental problems.

Houston schools
due to receive
computer funds
Gov. Zell Miller has announced
that during Fiscal Year 1995, the
Houston County school system
will receive &726.300 for computer
technology.
"I want Georgia’s students to
have the latest, most sophisticated
equipment in their schools, and
thanks to the success of Georgia’s
lottery, we are on our way to
achieving that goal," Miller said.
"I am pleased that so many students
in the Houston County school
system will have th.e opportunity to
take advantage of this latest
technology."
The money the school system
will receive is only part of the
$49.6 million in computer
technology funds sent to schools
throughout Georgia in FY 1995.
(Fiscal Year 1995 represents June
30, 1994 through July 1,1995)
Each of Georgia's 1,845 public
schools will receive $15,000 for
computer hardware and SIO,OOO for
wiring and retrofitting.
Technology in the classroom is
a centerpiece of Miller's education
initiatives funded by the Georgia
Lottery. A total of $299.8 million
in lottery revenue is earmarked tor
education in FY 95. The lottery
also funds the HOPE scholarship
program and the landmark pre
kindergarten program.
Soon after the lottery began
funding technology in the
classroom, the governor opened
nine Education Technology Centers
around the state to train teachers to
make the most of the new
equipment. Last year, $1.6 million
was appropriated for this effort.
Miller has proposed cutting
$16.9 million out of the central
office bureaucracy of Georgia public
school systems and move those
savings to the classroom. This
will fund part-time technology
specialists in every Georgia public
school.
