Crown Cork & Seal is buying the Perry plant, pending government anti-trust approval and admits there will be some plant closings. The Houston County Development Authority is working hard to help hasten the sale of the Heileman brewery, according to Dick Him, the executive director. He said banks were pushing Heileman to unload the brewery. The Industries and Trade Commission and Georgia Power are still marketing the brewery to foreign developers. 10 Years Ago Perry, along with four other communities,was on the "Red Carpet Tour” list. The event, sponsored by the Business Council of Georgia, was to introduce industrialist and state developers throughout the nation and sell them on Georgia. County landfill, proposed for the Clinchfield area just off U.S. 341, was being reviewed by the state Environmental Protection Division. Jones of Clinchfield was cited by the 350th Infantry Regiment of the 88th "Blue Devil" Division and awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for actual participation in combat against the enemy with the sth Army in Italy. James M. Whitten, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Whitten of Perry, received his silver wings upon graduation at Blackland Army Air Field, Waco, Texas, as a military pilot from the Army Air Forces Training Command installation. Pfc. Charles L. Kersey Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Kersey of Bonaire, was graduated last week from the Army Air Forces Flexible Gunnery School, Laredo Army Air Field, Laredo Texas. Kiwanis Art Show winners named Winners of the 1995 Perry Kiwanis Art Show are listed below. Their works were on display until March 27 at the Perry Public Library. Winners are: 7th Grade: first place, Bryan Nanna (home school), second place, Bryan Nanna Bth Grade: first place, Salena Sampson (Westfield) 9th Grade: first place, Christine Merdrich (Houston County High); second place, Le Anne Sasser (Houston Cunty High); thirrd place, Le Anne Sasser (Houston County High). Honorable Mention: Kenneth Nora (Houston County High), Allison Frost (Houston Martha Peavy retires Martha Head Peavy, formerly of Perry, retired on March 3 following 27 years with the U.S. Postal Service. When she retired, she was postmaster in Byromville. Her first assignment with the Postal Service was as a part-time flexible clerk, a position she held for 12 years. She then served 10 years as postmaster at Lilly before going to Byromville as postmaster, a position which she held for five years. Peavy graduated from Perry High School in 1947. She is the wife of Robert Peavy of Byromville. They have three children and three grandchildren. Peavy is the daughter of Velma Head and the late W.W. Head of Perry. Chapman promoted Maintenance Engineering announces the promotion of Keith Chapman to district manager. In his new position, he will be training salesmen throughout the Southeast. Keith has been associated with Maintenance Engineering since March of 1993. Maintenance Engineering specializes in the sale and distribution of premium quality lighting products and has developed some energy saving products; for commercial and industrial use.
