County gets
building funds
In an attempt to keep up with
the surge in Houston County
public school enrollment,
$1,618,380 was appropriated in the
fiscal year 1995 budget to provide
more classroom space Gov. Zell
Miller announced.
"It is not enough to improve the
opportunity to get an education,"
the governor said. "We must also
provide an environment that is
conducive to learning. I have
confidence in the teachers in the
Houston County school system but
we need to help them when we can.
I believe it is the responsibility of
the state to provide a place to
leam."
Houston County school system
is growing at an average of 474
new students per year. Many of
these students are taught in portable
classrooms because the schools
have exceeded student capacity and
have run out of classroom space.
