Fishermen will be facing results of 1994 flood
If what I've been told is true,
fishermen in the Perry area are
going to have to head north to find
good fishing this year.
Several folks around here have
told me that the favorite
destinations for anglers are Lake
Blackshear, Lake Seminole and
Lake Sinclair.
Last year's floods are still being
felt on most rivers, creeks and lakes
west and south of Perry, according
to the folks in the Fort Valley and
Albany Fisheries Offices of the
Wildlife Resources Division.
"It looks like it will be mid-June
before Lake Blackshear will be
ready to start filling," Lee Keefer of
the Albany office said.
"It will take several weeks to fill
because they want to check the dam
as the lake is refilling to make sure
there aren't any leaks."
Keefer said the native species
bass, bream and catfish shouldn’t
have any problem repopulating the
lake.
"We have done some work
around several springs on the
bottom of the lake to provide some
cool water refuges for striped bass."
Keefer said.
The Fisheries boys plan on
trying to establish a good
population of hybrids and striped
bass in Blackshear with a healthy

holding water again.
"We shouldn't have to stock
black bass," Keefer said. "They are
more than able to repopulate the
lake and there are ample spawning
areas and structure in the lake once
it fills back up."
Keefer said several fishermen
have been seen around the lake
marking maps with the location of
stump fields and other bottom
structure since the lake has been
down.
"The Wildlife Resources
Division has put in a number of
fish attractors concrete rubble in
several places and we've built some
experimental fish shelters in others
that fishermen may want to put
on their maps," Keefer said.
Aerial photos were taken with
the lake level down so far and new
bottom contour maps are being
produced, Keefer said, but not by
the state.

little better, but really good fishing
won't return to Blackshear for at
least two years," he said.
Lake Seminole, plugging the
southwest corner of the state,
remains a puzzle to fisheries
personnel.
"Seminole has been up in the air
since the flood," Keefer said. "Last
fall was good for catfish in the
rivers upstream from the lake. Last
year was extremely good for bass in
the lake, but there have been several
complaints this spring that the bass
fishing is not as good as usual.
"The Flint River is still high
and muddy. It was an unusually wet
year and the river never really came
down. Eroded areas caused by the
flood may be contributing to the
muddy water somewhat, but
October, November and December,
normally our dry months, were very
wet. The hydrilla is down some.
All indications are that this will be
an off year in Seminole," Keefer
said.
Bass fishing on Lake George
(Eufaula) has been slow this spring,
but the fisheries experts expect a
normal year. Last year, big slab
crappies were being caught, but so
far this spring, the fish being taken
are much smaller, Keefer said.

Valley Wildlife Division office,
said, "In general, fishing in the
streams and rivers in the area should
be better" following the floods.
Surprised? His explanation
makes sense.
"The floods washed out an awful
lot of private ponds and all the
bass, bream, catfish and crappie that
were in those ponds are now in the
rivers and creeks," Schleiger said.
Sedimentation and siltation may
cause a few problems, but "flooding
generally serves to flush out a lot
of built up sediments," he said.
Snags and trees dumped into the
rivers by the floods actually should
improve fishing, too, Schleiger
said.
"Snags and tree limbs improve
fish habitat by providing cover for
fish and for the smaller fish and
other organisms fish feed on," he
said.
The lakes to the north, Sinclair,
Tobesofkee and High Falls, "came
through the floods in good shape,"
Schleiger said.
"Our fish population surveys
conducted last fall showed no real
changes, overall. There was no real
harm done to the fishery in Middle
Georgia," Schleiger said.
"After all, fish know how to
react to flooding and high water."
