Former Perryan Larry Ellison

Nov. 5 election.
According to reports, Ellison

He recently told The Brunswick
News he is honored to become the

house post in Glynn County since
Waters: One nation under
God isn’t so true any more
By RICK JOHNSTONE
For the Times-Journal
Just about everyone in this
country knows the words to the
“pledge of Allegiance” by heart.
One of the phrases “one nation
under God” may not be carried
out as much as in the past.
That is the sentiment of John
Waters, pastor of Rehoboth
Baptist Church in Perry.
He told members of the Perry
Exchange Club Nov. 14 that the
nation seems to have been drift
ing away from that concept.
“If it is not important, why is it
in our pledge,” asked Waters.
The man who has served at
Rehoboth for the past five years
said there are certain factors which
must be followed if the United
States is to return to one of the pre
cepts of the Founding Fathers.
First, according to Waters, is
having the right kind of nation,
which he believes does exist.
“1 like the spirit of patriotism
and the freedom we have,” he
said. “There is freedom of reli-

Reconstruction after the Civil War.
Ellison is the son of Lois
Ellison McDaniel and the late J.S.
Ellison of Perry.
He is a 1967 graduate of Perry
High School and holds a masters
degree in public administration, an
undergraduate in criminal justice
administration and an associate’s
degree in business administration.
His mother said Ellison is a for
mer Perry Police officer.
During his campaign he spoke
gion. which means the govern
ment can’t control religion, not
that the government would void
religion.”
Waters said another factor in
having “one nation under God” is
having the right kind of leaders.
He wondered how that could
happen if the leaders of the nation
do not embrace that concept.
Waters said, “We need wise
and Godly leaders.” The key for
individuals to make a difference
in the quality of leadership is to be
involved in the political process,
he added.
The third factor necessary in
returning to “one nation under
God is to have the right kind of
God, said Waters.
“The founding fathers knew
which God they had in mind,”
Waters commented. “It was the
God who revealed himself as the
father of Jesus, the biblical God.”
He said the country should not
discriminate against those who have
another god, but “the nation was
founded under the biblical God.”
“We must believe God speaks
to the political leaders, that He is
working and that He loves us,”
said Waters. “That makes Him the
right kind of God.”
