PRINCIPALS RECOGNIZED The Georgia Association of Elementary School Principals
(GAESP), at its fall conference, recognized the 1996 Georgia Schools of Excellence. The
theme of this year's conference was Award Winning Principals, and winning principals
shared their successes with the state organization. Each year, ten elementary schools in
Georgia are selected for the prestigious title as a School of Excellence. These schools
represent all that is best in public education and are given incentives to further enhance
their educational programs. The leadership team and Mrs. Patsy Hutto at Perry
Elementary received a framed certificate from their peers as special recognition for this
worthy achievement. Although the school has already been recognized by other
groups, it is particularly meaningful for the principal to be so honored by their col
leagues in GAESP. Gatnered are (front, from left) Mrs. Horne, Mrs. Arrington, Mrs.

Emergency personnel: Finding some house
numbers like picking winning lotto number
By EMILY JOHNSTONE
Times-Journal Staff
Perry area law enforcement and
rescue personnel may at times feel
they are searching for lucky lotto
numbers when they are attempting
to find an address to which they
have been called in reference to an
emergency situation.
Some homes do not have their
street numbers properly marked
and this can be frustrating for res
cue personnel. Improperly marked
homes will cause them to have
trouble finding someone who may
need their help pronto.
Perry fireman Earl Nelson said
there is still a problem with “a lot
of houses that aren’t marked.”
“It’s not too bad if you’ve got
one house without a number and
the rest of the houses on the street
are marked,” he said, adding that
the problem lies when there are
multiple houses not marked or if a

block “jumps from the 700 block
to 900 biock.”
Nelson recommends residents
marking their homes with num
bers at least four to six inches tall.
“They need to be large enough
to be seen from the road,” said the
fireman.
If a mailbox is marked, it needs
to be marked on both sides. “A lot
of people just put numbers on the
side their mailman would be trav
eling toward. It helps to have
numbers on both sides,” added
Nelson.
In another area of concern,
local residents should take precau
tions when readying their heating
sources for the upcoming winter
season.
“Cold weather is upon us now
and people should have their
heaters serviced, checked and
cleaned,” said Nelson. “This will
lessen the chance of a fire.”
And, holiday decorating can be
fun, but safety rules need to be
observed with this, too.
Nelson said residents should
be sure not to overload their elec
trical circuits.
Keeping plenty of water in the
stand for a live tree is another
important thing to remember. He
also recommends checking elec
trical cords to make sure there is
no fraying or cracking—especial
ly with wires to be used on a tree.
“It does not take long for a
Christmas tree to bum,” he said.
Finally, be sure to check
smoke detector batteries to make
sure they are still operable. And,
clean and vacuum the detector.
“Dust can make a smoke detector
malfunction,” noted Nelson.
