Perry Chamber leaders make several
changes to program of work for ’97
By Jj JOHNSON
Times-Journal Editor
Members of the Perry Area Chamber of
Commerce Board of Directors looked to the future
Nov. 21 when they approved a program of work for
1997.
The program is the result of a weekend retreat at
St. Simons Island held Nov. 8-9, Chamber CEO and
President Hayley Godbee said.
Among the major changes and additions to the
program from previous years is a change in the indus
try committee. The Existing Industries Committee
will be disbanded and will become an Existing
Industries Council under the Economic Development
Committee.
Godbee said committee members believe the
change will better serve both future development and
existing industries.
The Economic Development Committee, to be
chaired by Paul Davis of Weyerhaeuser, will also
work for additional import and export information for
members who are interested in international trade.
That committee will also oversee efforts to create
a database of corporate retirees in the community.
Godbee said the idea is to serve as a previously
untapped resource for economic development teams
and assistance to existing industries.
New goals for the Education Committee, to be
chaired by Paulette Tompkins of Perry High School,
include a public safety scholarship to assist lawmen
in post-secondary education, and a new youth leader
ship program modeled on the Leadership Perry pro
gram for adults.

will head the Government Affairs Committee. A new
effort by that committee will be to help the city iden
tify potential areas of growth through annexation and *
consolidation of city-county services.
That panel will also follow closely any develop
ments relating to the mandatory renovation or reloca
tion of the Houston County Courthouse.
The Leadership Perry Committee, headed by
Linda Easterly of Perry Hospital, will coordinate the
Youth Leadership project with the Education
Committee, and will also conduct a survey of
Leadership Perry class members to identify areas
they perceive as weaknesses in the community.
Chairman Jim O’Neal of Tuggle and O’Neal
Insurance, will work with Membership Committee
members to enhance membership values in the cham
ber.
One area discussed is providing value-added ben
efits up to and including providing access to medical
insurance for small businesses. Arthur Loewen of Met
Life Insurance Co., will head the Military Affairs
committee. A major change for that group will be a
spring Military Ball instead of a fall event. The ball
will be held April 5, 1997, the same day as the Perry
Dogwood Festival, Godbee said.
Godbee said the Public Relations Committee will
direct an expanded, quarterly publication by the
chamber for members and community leaders.
Dong Barnett of Chick-fil-A will head the Small
Business Committee. New areas of work there
include a commercial database of available commer
cial projects and crime alerts to members of potential
problems as discovered by the Perry Police
Department.

FOR GOODNESS SAKE
Deborah Roberts to keynote
1997 Chamber annual meeting
By Jj JOHNSON
Times-Journal Editor
Projects in Perry dominated
discussions during the Nov. 21
meeting of the Houston County
Development Authority in Perry.
Perry Area Chamber of
Commerce President Hayley
‘ Godbee announced that national
television newscaster and person
ality Deborah Roberts, a Perry
native, will be the keynote speak
er for the Jan. 28, 1997 annual
meeting of the Perry chamber.
Meanwhile, work on schools
in Perry is beginning. Houston
County School Superintendent
Tony Hinnant told Authority
members materials would arrive
this week for the new roof project
at Tucker Elementary.
That project was funded by
Board of Education members
prior to the Sept. 17 vote for $34
million in school bonds. Hinnant
said work on the metal roof
would begin almost immediately.
Another project in the works,
involving the relocation of Perry
Middle School to the North Perry
Bypass. Some clearing is taking
place at that property to allow
engineers to do topographical
studies.
Hinnant also told Authority
members he has concerns about
the potential for privatization of
base housing at Robins Air Force
Base.
He said Robins officials had
already told him to anticipate up
to 1,000 new families in the mid
state area during the 1997-98
time frame as projects are moved
to the area from Kelly Air Force
Base in San Antonio, Texas.
The greater concern is any
change to privately-owned base
housing would result in the chil
dren of those families attending
public schools instead of base
schools.
Presently, about 900 students
attend two base schools through
the sixth grade. Hinnant said the
school system would face major
impact should those students be
moved into the public schools.
In other Perry-related
announcements, Development
Authority CEO Tim Martin said
the PPG modernization project is

on schedule to begin within a few
days. The project includes about
sl9 million in new equipment to
modernize the five-year-old glass
manufacturing plant.
Employees of the plant will be
used to complete the project,
which is expected to take about 60
days, he said.
Perry City Manager Skip

duct a land use study on the south

Life’s Rainbows
A combination of many things make up
out lives, We have “ups" ana “downs ,
that’s how life goes, When someone
crosses out pathway, blessing us too,
That has to be one of “ life’s rainbows. ”
Any blessing can be called a .-rainbow, ”
If we choose to see it that way, Living
out lives, having compassion for others,
And showing them love along the way.
“Rainbows" are sent into our life for a
reason, just as everything has it's place
and lime, Special people and things
help to make up these, Adding blessings
to your life and to mine.
Just remember to cherish the “rain
bows” in life. As God truly blesses us
with them each day. Don’t take for
granted things that we cherish, For
they might surely be taken away.
We don’t' know how long a rainbow’s
beauty will last, Each one never to be
seen anymore, Just as a special person
we've kiwwn and loved. Who’s been
taken from life, through death's door.
It’s been said that, at the end of the
rainbow There’s a pot of gold waiting
there. But in life, there are “rainbows '
to see, For God sends us blessings
beyond compare.
Britney Benter was a “rainbow” in life,
She blessed us daily with her love, Now
she looks down upon us each day, As
she dwells with the Father above.
Now she will forever be one of “God’s
rainbows”, For He needed her much
more than we, Now when a rainbirw's
beauty crosses the sky, Just who is the
person that you see?
