ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE lt hap
pened more than 30 years ago and lasted
over nine years.
It tore at the very fabric of our nation pit
ting young against old, father against son.
When it ended in 1975, it had claimed
58,202 lives.
In the late 60’s and early 70’s casualty lists
in the newspapers and on Walter Cronkite’s
CBS Evening News carried reports of major
battles and the total killed and wounded for
the day drew our attention. At the same time
our daily lives went on normally.
Only when a friend or relative was lost
did the war come home, and even then its
magnitude was greatly diminished for those
who died became just another statistic.
Last week all 52,202 of the men and
women, husbands, fathers, moms, wives,

YOUTHS DISPLAY CANDLES AT COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS SERVICE
Event Drew Large Crowd To Downtown At Dusk Dec. 1
for Senate President Pro-Tempore for the
1997-98 term of the Georgia General
Assembly. He was nominated on Nov. 13 by
Senator George Hooks of Americus.
The Pro-Tem is the highest elected posi
tion in the Senate and ranks second only to
the Lieutenant Governor, who is the
President of the Senate.
“It’s definitely a great honor,” Perdue
said in a recent interview. “I’m thrilled with
the chance to take on a new challenge.”
His new position brings Perdue even
more authority and influence. As Pro-Tem
he presides over the Senate in the absence of
the Lieutenant Governor and serves on the
middle Georgia. Those who carried out the
ultimate responsibility of living free came
for all to see with their names inscribed on a
one-half scale replica of the Vietnam
Veterans Memorial at the Museum of
Aviation at Robins Air Force Base.
With their names etched in the chrono
logical order of their death, the magnitude
of individual sacrifice and that of our nation
became clear to all.
Were it not for being inside, the people
who came to pay their respects have been in
Washington, D.C. Their emotions were just
as intense, their tears just as real, and the
momentos they left at the wall just as mean
ingful.
In the few days these heroes were here
several thousand residents went to the
museum to visit the “wall that heals.”
Whether or not after 35 years revisiting the
past hiffils is an individual judgement.
Maybe an older phrase would be equally fit
ting ... “lest we forget...”

Warden becomes
business manager of
Houston County
Correctional Institution
By EMILY JOHNSTONE
Times-Journal Staff
When Larry “Tiny” Fairchild returned to
work at the Houston County Correctional
Institution after lunch Dec. 3. he was wearing
a new hat.
Houston County commissioners agreed
unanimously at their regular meeting that day
that Fairchild would be reassigned from war
den to business manager, a newly created posi
tion recently recommended by the Georgia
Department of Corrections.
Houston Commission Chairman J. Sherrill
Stafford said the move would benefit all con
cerned.
“We have had a series of problems in the
jail over a period of time,” he said. “We have
had a lot of tension.”
Several employees at the facility have been
linked to improper conduct.
Stafford said because of the recent incidents
involving jail employees and prisoners, which
have included court appearances by some of
the workers, Fairchild had been “under a lot of
stress.”
Fairchild has been in the state prison system
for 19 years.
Stafford said the former warden voluntarily
agreed to the new position which knocks his
paycheck down some $12,000, from about;
$49,500 to approximately $37,500.
Marvin McLeod, who has been an assistant
jailer at the facility, has been appointed to

Likewise, Howard has praises for
Perdue.
“Sen. Perdue is well respected for his
integrity and for his thorough understanding
of legislative issues,” said Howard. “I know
we can look forward to a productive term
with his leadership.”
Perdue is expected to assume the Pro-
Tem post in January.
