Perry mayor Jim Worrall shares childhood collection of trains at city hall

Christmas was a special time at
the Worrall house on Noble Street
when James Worrall was a young
boy.
This was during the times
when children awoke on
Christmas morning to find that a
decorated tree, along with toys
and other presents, which had
magically appeared overnight.
During the season, young Jim
Worrall and his brothers took part
in what became a family and
neighborhood tradition.
His dad, C.J., and mom,
Emma, would put together a large
train set and invite all the neigh
borhood kids to come around and
play with the set and their boys.
“My mom loved it, too,” Jim
Worrall recalled. “She would help
put it up every year. We would
have a house full of people com
ing from everywhere to see it.”
The train set grew in size as
each year passed.
So did the boys.
Today, James, more widely
known as “Mayor Jim,” carries on
the tradition after inheriting much
of the set from his dad and adding
pieces during the past few years.
All the kids in Perry (and
grownups.too) are invited to come
to city hall on Washington Street
during the holiday season and see
part of his train collection set up
in the front entrance area.
The Perry mayor has always
enjoyed having children view his
collection. While in the teaching
profession at Perry Elementary
several years ago, he would set up
his trains in the hallway for the
kids to stop and inspect.
“I have had a number children
ask me to do this, also some peo

A MAYOR AND HIS TRAINS - Perry Mayor Jim Worrall has not lost his fascination
with trains even though he is the one in charge of putting together an extensive train
set every year during the holiday season instead of nis father, the late C.J. Worrall. Jim
Worrall's father helped instill a love of collecting model train memorabilia in his son by
example. For many years the elder Worrall's home was 'the place' for kids to gather to
ooh and aah over the sets.

locomotive back and forth during
an interview Dec. 2.
People coming in and out of
city hall stopped to take a look at

interview that he believes the
upcoming session of the Georgia
General Assembly that begins in
January will have a heavy focus
on education issues.
“I believe we will have a lot of
issues out of the education area,”
commented Walker.
That will be just one area law
makers will be taking a look at.
Walker said the sessions have

Worrall shared some advice for
parents who are thinking of pur
chasing a train set as a Christmas
present for some bright-eyed
youngster.
Keep it simple, he said. “Get a

“since I’ve been here.”
With all of the growth both in
the state as well as the General
Assembly, the Perry lawmaker
said there is simply too much busi
ness to conduct in the short time
frame the General Assembly has.
“I think we need more recesses
than in the past,” said Walker.

don’t spend a whole lot of money
if it is the first set.”
In the meantime. Perry kids
from one to 92 are encouraged to
go by city hall at the Washington
Street location and enjoy watching
the trains go round and round.
The facility is open Monday
through Friday from 8 am. until 5 p.m
The Assembly has 40 official
days to conduct all of its business
each session. Recesses stretch the
meetings several days longer.
