Indigent care expert:
County rallies
around those in need
By EMILY JOHNSTONE
Times-Journal Staff
An area task force meeting
concerning indigent heath care
held by representatives of Janus
Healthcare Consultants Inc. has
shown the vice-president of that
company, Linde Howell, that
Houston County seems to be “one
community that rallies around its
people.”
That is the word from Howell,
who, along with several other
employees of Janus, a Colorado
based firm, will be conducting an
indigent care study over the next
three months.
The meeting, held Dec. 12 at
the Flint Electric building on Ga.
96, included approximately 30
local business representatives.
Part of the study includes
determining how the business sec
tor could help fund care for indi
gents as health care costs continue
to spiral up during a time of
change in the field of health care.
“There was an amazing
response from the business sector,”
said Howell. “Perhaps more than
I’ve seen in most communities.”
Part of her goal is to educate
the business sector on how indi
gent care in its present mode
affects them.
“There is a direct cost shifting”
to pay for indigent care now,” she
noted, pointing out that indigent
care can include people who have
recently lost iobs and “upper mid
dle class who have no health
insurance.”
“This population (indigent)
isn’t always down and out,” said
Howell.
Many now use the emergency
room for medical care most often
sought in a doctor’s office.
However, for those with no insur
ance, there is often nowhere else
to turn except the local ER.
In some communities indigent
care clinics have been established,
said Howell.
“There are several other exam
ples around Georgia,” she said.
Funding for the care is provided
by “collaborative pooling by busi
nesses and hospitals.”
Howell thinks with some of
these the “success is incredible.”
An indigent care clinic for chil
dren in Fort Collins, Col. receives
funding from seven different
areas, she said, including city,
county and private business.
There are doctors who volun
teer time and pharmaceutical com
panies who provide some medi
cines at no cost, Howell added.
The next step for the Houston
County study will begin in
January when Howell will begin
interviewing business leaders and
people who fall into the indigent
care category, among others.
The study is being funded
jointly by the Houston County
Commission and the Hospital
Authority of Houston County.
Cost for the study is set at
$50,000.

Pain may be
eliminated for
millions
(SPECIAL) —A drug that is
exciting researchers in the
treatment of pain has been
formulated into a new product
known as “Arthur Itis™” and
is being called a “Medical
Miracle” by some, in the treat
ment of debilitating condi
tions such as arthritis, bursi
tis, rheumatism, painful

ple backache, bruises, and
more. Although the mecha

experiments indicate that
“Arthur Itis™” relieves pain
by first selectively attracting,

senger chemical which carries
pain sensations to the brain,
thus eliminating pain in the
affected area. “Arthur Itis™”
is an odorless, greaseless,
non-staining cream and is
available immediately with
