Final call for Santa letters
The Houston Times-Journal,
with cooperation from the U.S
Post Office in Perry, has intercept
ed many area youths’ letters to
Santa Claus, copied them and for
warded them to the North Pole.
Those letters will be published
in the Dec. 24 issue of the Times-
Journal.
The deadline for getting letters
to the North Pole via the Times-
Journal is Dec. 20 at 5 p.m. at
either the Santa Letters box in
front of the U.S. Post Office or at

While I haven't had the oppor

from my contacts with her how
helpful and compassionate she can
be.
When my mother died three
years ago, Annis was helpful in
working through the maze of legal
terms to understand South

She has also been a great friend
across the street since my arrival

visits back and other as we have
worked with her on various public
notice ads for the papei and in
handling other matters.

coming but didn’t really want to
hear that she was retiring.

Almost 14 months ago, when I
took my ambulance ride to the
Perry Hospital with a heart attack,
one of the first people I asked to
see was Ray Mims, our cartoonist
at the Houston Times Journal.
Several years ago Ray retired
from coaching and teaching at
Perry Middle School and became
our cartoonist at the old Perry
Times. He and I developed quite a

friendship over the years, and I
particularly wanted to tap his
expertise at surviving heart attacks
and his understanding of what was
going on.
As he always does, Ray Mims
came through for me. He visited
me often during my recovery, he
talked with me on the phone. He
offered encouragement and sug
gestions. He also prayed for me,
something I really appreciate.
Now, Ray Mims has come
through for me again. When I dis
covered that my alma mater,
Carson-Newman College, would
be on national television on
ESPN2 when they played for the
national championship in Division
II football, I set out to find some
one with the proper connection lo
that network.
I asked Ray about his service.
Yes, he had the channel, and yes, I
could visit Saturday afternoon.
There, he offered his favorite easy
chair to me, tuned in the television
perfectly and even fed me home
made, low-fat chili.
Friends don’t get any better
than that. He even pulled for my
team and mourned with me their
23-14 loss. What a guy.
