Author J. Michael Unrue visits Perry, signs his newest book
J. Michael Unrue, author of
“Don’t Count That Chicken ’til
your fingers need lickin’’, signed
copies of this latest of his books at
The Perry Bookstore on Dec. 14.
He impressed visitors as a
pleasant young man. He said
enjoyed his short stay in Perry,
meeting people and autographing
his book. The book is published
by Myriad Publishing of
Greenville, S. C.

held their Christmas luncheon at
the New Perry Hotel Dec. 12.
Club president Barbara Jones
presided.
Pauline Lewis, program chair
man, presented “One Voice”, a
local trio composed of Dorothy
Sichelstiel, Elaine Deckmar and
Terri Wood, accompanied by John
Blythe and Dorothy Sichelstiel.
They sang “Rocking Around the
Christmas Tree”, “Go, Tell it on
the Mountains”, What Child Is
This?” and “This World Will
Never Be the Same (Since the Son
of God was bom a little Baby in
Bethlehem).
Elaine Deckmar sang “O Holy
Night”, and the trio led the club in
singing “Joy! to the World” and
“Silent Night”.

Members of the Porterfield
Garden Club held their Christmas
luncheon at the New Perry Hotel
Dec. 11. Twenty-two members
received gifts provided by the
hostesses. Place cards bore pic
tures of various kinds of birds.
Instead of drawing numbers for
door prizes, names of birds were
called. Bird houses, bird feeders,
bird seed in various containers
made for lively conversation. In
front of each place setting was a
red candle in a candle holder with
handle, which the hostesses also
gave to members and guests pre
sent.

The December meeting of the
Delphian Club was a Christmas
luncheon held at the New Perry
Hotel Dec. 12. Norma Cheek,
president, welcomed everyone
and recognized the new members,
Lynette Home, Irene Stone and
Grayce Wilson.
Hilda Walker gave the invoca
tion. After the meal. Jay Turner, a
native of Perry and a music minis
ter in Hawkinsville, gave a
Christmas program, playing the
piano and singing. The meeting
was closed by the president who
announced the next meeting
would be on Jan. 9, 1997.

Preston Taylor, native of Elko,
and resident of Detroit since 1946
when he was fresh out of the
Army, has been visiting relatives
in Perry and Henderson for sever
al days.
In Henderson, he visited broth
er and sister Hazel Dancer and
Henry Taylor; in Perry he visited
sisters and brother, Beverly Grace,
Inez Passmore, and Calvin Taylor,
and their families.
Preston Taylor is retired as a
Postal Manager in Detroit, begin
ning in 1987 and retiring after 38
years’ service. He and his wife,
Viola Taylor, daughter Laura
Taylor, and son David Taylor all
reside in Detroit.
Taylor left Perry on Tuesday,
completing his round-trip flight
back to Detroit. He enjoys getting
the local news from “home.”

An arts and crafts fair for
youths is planned. Kids can expe
rience magical making fun crafts
such as the Disappearing Coin
Trick, the Flying Butterfly Trick,
Magic Wands, and of course, the
Classic Rabbit Trick.
Other crafts to be made: Hot
shot basketball, Arcade pinball,
designer hats, and All About Me
crafts, plus many more.
Cost will depend on crafts and
how many the participant wishes
to make. Magic trick crafts will
cost 60 cents each, while the
Pinball Arcade may cost a dollar.

Kiwanis Club, who received the
Kiwanian of the Year Award at the
annual Spouses Night Banquet
held at the New Perry Hotel on
Dec. 10. Past president Arthur

in Plains, and former pastor of
Perry First Baptist Church, was
guest speaker, and was accompa
nied by his wife, Nelle Ariail. Dr.

Former U.S. Rep. Richard Ray
and his wife, Barbara Ray, were
guests, along with spouses of
Kiwanis members, and widows of
deceased Kiwanis members.
The Rev. Jim Shipley, club
member and pastor of Perry
Presbyterian Church, gave the
benediction. The opening prayer
was given by. Robert Brown, club
president.

whose children helped them cele
brate their 50th wedding anniver
sary on Dec. 8 at the Windsor
Hotel in Americus.

who are celebrating their 40th
