Obituaries
Leman Phelan Duke Sr.
Graveside services for Leman Phelan
Duke Sr., 78, who died Jan. 1, 1997, were
held Jan 2 at Oaklawn Cemetery in Fort
Valley.
Bom in Crawford County, he was the
son of the late John F. Duke Sr. and
Myrtle Bowman Duke. Fie served four
years in the United States Navy during
World War 11. He attended Middle
Georgia College and was a graduate of the
G.A.B. School of Business. He was a
member of the First United Methodist
Church of Fort Valley. A retired peach
farmer, he along with his brother and
father are credited with developing the
“Duke of Georgia,” a well-known peach
variety of the 19505.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn
Smisson Duke; daughter, Nancy Duke
Ward of Fairfax, Va.; son, Lee Phelan
Duke Jr. of Perry; and three grandchil
dren.
The family requests donations be made
to the First Methodist Church of Fort
Valley or The Burke Foundation.

Randolph Brewster
Services for Randolph Brewster, 88,
who died Dec. 30, 1996, were held at
graveside, Jan. 3, 1997 at Perry Memorial
Gardens with the Rev. Jim Shipley offici
ating.
He was a native of St. Louis, Mo. and
an Army Air Corp Veteran (where he
received training in aerial photography).
While employed with Fairchild Aerial
Surveys, his assignments included the
mapping of British Honduras, Guatemala,
& Papua New Guinea. He was a Branch
Chief at Wright Patterson Field in Dayton,
Ohio, prior to his employment at Robins
Air Force Base where he retired in 1969
with 35 years of service. He was a mem
ber of the Perry Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jean
Loudon Brewster of Perry; daughter, Dr.
Penny B. Heming of Charleston, S.C.;
son, Christopher Brewster of Houston,
Texas and four grandchildren.

resident for 10 years, retired from
Continental Can after 32 years and
worked for Harrison County
Experimental Forestry and Agriculture
Division.
He was preceded in death by: Joanna

son, John Michael Wells; sisters, Beulah
Cliff, Opal Hager. Ethel Jones.
