Firemen seek to help one of
their own during difficult time

/ takes the old guys to look after the
* * I young guys,” said John Scott of his
I years spent as a volunteer with the
JLPerry Fire Department.
Now, fellow firefighters are looking after Scott.
The 54-year-old pastor and businessman under
went open heart surgery recently, causing the other
wise-active Scott to consider retirement.
Members of the fire department are seeking dona
tions to help the Scotts during this time when the fam
ily patriarch must slow down and take things easy.
Scott is a much-loved family man who flashes a
smile big enough to embrace the world.
One in a family of 11 children, he was bom to Fred
and Eulah Scott who lived on a farm about three
miles outside the Perry city limits.
John Scott’s parents were instrumental in teaching
him the right way to live, he said.
“They trained us and taught us and sometimes
used a strap on jjs!”, Scott recalled. “They raised
some good children.”
He met the love of his life, Vera, during the 19605.
Together, they embarked on a journey they are still
traveling, raising five children in the process—
Kelvin, John, Stacy, Dana, and Marcia.
John Scott operated a tire business for many years.
During that time, he said he helped a number of peo
ple by giving them tires for their vehicles when they
could not afford to pay, Kelvin Scott said during a
recent interview.
“Being my daddy, that’s how he is,” Kelvin Scott
said.
“He lives what he preaches,” said Perry Fire Chief
Gary Hamlin.
Hamlin said he remembers when John Scott
became a volunteer at the department in 1982. Scott
is now the longest serving volunteer for the depart
ment.
“One thing that pops out in my mind about your
daddy is the time he won a helmet,” Hamlin told
Kelvin Scott. “It was at an equipment show. He still
wears that helmet.”
Hamlin said he would bet John Scott would say the
worst fire he helped fight was the one which occurred
during the early 1980s when an old school building
located on W.F. Ragin Drive was lost in a blaze.

People may help by contacting Gary
Hamlin at the fire department at 987-
1212.
Hamlin was right.
“We lost a lot of equipment during that fire,” said
John Scott. “It was a big, wood building with lots of
lumber in it.”
The firefighters fought a blaze spewing forth such
intense heat that it melted parts on the fire trucks.
“We would all jump to put the fire out,” Scott
remembered of his time with the department. “We are
very close when we are working together. You never
know when your life is in danger and we watch each
other’s back.”
John Scott, the preacher at New Pentecostal
Church, feels a lot of love for his town and “prays
constantly for this city, the councilmen, the mayor,
everybody,” said Kelvin Scott, who is a full-time
employee at the fire department.
“There is scripture in the Bible that says to pray for
your elected officials. That’s just another way he lives
what he preaches,” added Hamlin.
Now, in this time of need, fire department person
nel are telling people about John Scott’s faithfulness
to his family, church and town and asking folks to
help this special man by contributing donations.
People may do so by contacting Hamlin at the fire
department at 987-1212. Checks may be made out to
John Scott Sr. and left at the department located along
Washington Street behind city hall.
“I want to let the citizens of Perry know John is
going through some bad times right now. I want them
to know how he has given to the community in the
past,” said Hamlin.
Meanwhile, firefighters are hoping Scott will
decide to become the department’s chaplain.
There is probably a good chance he will agree as
he looks at the department as an extension of his fam
ily. “They are fantastic,” Scott said. And about his
ministry? “That is a gift God gave me. I must carry on
because of that.”
With the continuing tender care of his wife and
other family members, along with the support of the
rest of the community, John Scott should be able to do
just that.
