EYE ON THE BASKET - Westfield Hornet Claire Hart
keeps her eye on the basket as she shoots against
Southland last week.
Southland edges Lady Hornets
By PHIL CLARK
Times-Journal Sports
In a game that was close all the
way, the Southland Lady Raiders
took a six-point lead after three
quarters then had to hold off a
furious Westfield comeback in the
fourth quarter to claim a 52-50
win at the Hornets Nest Jan 16.
Westfield had taken a 13-10
first quarter lead behind Stephanie
Barr and Claire Hart, who com
bined to score nine.
After building the lead to 17-
12, the Lady Hornets suddenly
went cold from the floor and
watched as Amanda Mathis and
Whitney Trask brought the Lady
Raiders back.
With the score 17-16 Westfield,
Trask converted a three-point play
to give Southland the lead for the
first time at 19-17.
The Southland run reached
nine points on a Mathis basket
before Westfield’s Amy Harold
scored with 2:05 left in the half.
That cut the lead to two and Mary
Katherine Walker tied it on a bas
ket after a steal by Barr.
Barr then gave the lead back to
Westfield at 23-2! before the
Lady Raiders scored the final four
points in the half to take a 25-23

WARNER ROBINS As was
the story with the previous three
games Jan. 17, a mustered defense
in the seeond half would not gath
er the victory for the Perry Middle
School Panthers over the Warner
Robins Middle School Warriors.
The Bth grade Panthers fell to
the Warriors by the score of 42-
39. A huge offense, with screens
and picks, had the Panthers
scrambling to salvage points from
lucky chances.
Anthony Cromwell was the
bulk of the Warriors’ offense, scor
ing 24 points. Fouls plagued the
Panthers in the third quarter, but a
halftime lead.
Trask led the Lady Raiders to a
38-32 third quarter lead with two
baskets in the third. The Lady
Hornets scored just nine, 5 by
Mary Katherine Walker and four
by Barr.
Just as suddenly as the Lady
Hornets went cold in the middle
quarters, they got hot in the
fourth. Southland was able to hold
on, though, as they paraded to the
foul line for 17 free throws in the
quarter as Barr and Hart scored 6
each for Westfield, Walker added
4 and Jennifer Stewart had a bas
ket.
Although Southland scored
just three field goals in the fourth
quarter, they converted eight from
the foul line for the 52-50 win.
Walker led all scorers with her
16 points including two three
pointers, while Barr added 13,
also with two three-pointers. Hart
was in double digits with 11
points, including six in the Lady
Hornets’ 18-point fourth quarter.
Trask and Joey Sheppard scored
14 each for the Lady Raiders.
Amanda Mathis added 10.
Westfield’s record is even at 5-
5 While Southland improved to 8-
3.
more cautious team came out at
the beginning of the fourth quarter.
With the lead changing hands
more times than a newborn baby
has diapers, the final 46 seconds
took forever.
Pressure by defense from the
Panthers forced six turnovers in
the final minute. As the lead
slipped away from the Panthers at
the hands of Cromwell, the final
seconds licked off the clock, and
the Panthers walked away with a
49-42 loss.
Scoring for Perry: Cody Allen,
11 points; Jerry Drazny, 4 points;
Rashad Wynn, 6 points; Edwin
Allen, 12 points; Laron Davis, 2
points; Rashard Gordon, 2 points.

Americus wins
By PHIL CLARK
Times-Journal Sports
The Americus Panthers handed
Perry its second close loss of the
weekend with a narrow 64-63 win
Jan 18 at the Panther Pit.
The teams exchanged leads all
night before Americus outscored
Perry 16-13 in the fourth quarter
for the one-point victory.
Perry opened up with a flurry,
scoring 21 first quarter points as
Daniel Harvey, Johnny Watkins
and O’Shauna Whitehurst each
had six. But Americus used a bal

ahead with 21 second quarter
points.
Dannorris Harvey was the only
Perry player to score consistently,
picking up 9of his team high 17 in
the second.
Americus led 38-36 at halftime
in a game coached by Carl Dixon
for Perry as Carl Thomas was out
of town to be with his grandmoth
er who is recovering from surgery
in Louisiana.
With a good defensive effort in
the third, Perry regained the lead
by holding Americus to just 10
third quarter points. But sopho
more Fabian Walker got hot for
Americus in the fourth quarter,
hitting two three-pointers and
scoring 11 of his game high 22

Panther battle
The quarter was punctuated by
two technical fouls called against
Perry, resulting in two points, and
two possessions for Americus.
Americus went up by four, 55-51
on a 3-point play by Walker, and
led 58-53 with 5:03 left.
Johnny Watkins hit a trey for
Perry then Daniel Harvey pulled
the locals into a 58-58 tie with a
basket at the 2:19 mark.
After Americus had taken a
63-59 lead, Walker missed a slam
dunk on a fast break and Perry’s
Daniel Harvey grabbed the
rebound and Dannorris Harvey
scored for Perry, but the Panthers
ran out of time in their comeback
bid.
Dannorris Harvey scored 17
for Perry, Daniel Harvey and
Whitehurst added 12 each, while

game proved to be a nail-biter in
the fourth quarter.
Leading 12-7 at the half, the
