THE WINNERS - Tell whether the following is true or false: Six times seven equals
seven times six is an example of the commutative property of multiplication. If you
answered true, then you ana members of the Perry Middle School Academic team were
on track. On Jan. 11, the PMS team traveled to Macon to compete in the regional PAGE
Academic Bowl where questions similar to the one above were asked. The group had
won the privilege of representing its school by competing earlier in the year with the
other county middle schools and being one of tne top four teams. The PMS team of Chad
Alligood, Debbie Berg, Bethany Cooper, Jeffrey Kite, Ronald Ragin, Wendy Tarpley, and
Justin Waters have spent many afternoons after school pouring over questions about
math, science, history, English, the arts, health and physical education, and trivia in
preparation for several academic competitions. During the contest, not only did the team
have to answer the questions correctly, but they also had to answer very quickly
because the students were vying with their opponents for possible bonus points. There
were 17 teams from all over middle Georgia competing for just two spots available for
the state semifinals at Macon College. After competing through seven rounds of compe
tition and losing only once, the team was able to compete for one of those two spots.
They won the final round by a sizable margin. The team and their coach, Becky Crockett,
were presented with a placiue for their efforts. Crockett, an English teacher at Perry
Middle School, teaches all of the students on the team. The state semifinals at Macon
College will be heid on Feb. 1. Team members are shown with Perry Middle School
Principal Bobby Pennington.
