Perry High students serve as mentors

is a group of students at Perry High
School who have spent some of their extra
VLtKtime this school year helping younger stu
dents understand the dangers of drug use and how to
overcome the temptation to follow some of their
peers down that destructive path.
Molly Tripp and Daniel Wright are two of that
group who recently discussed the merits of the Drug
Abuse Resistance Education Mentor Program.-
Tripp, a senior at PHS, said she used her skills as
a cheerleader to invoke the interest of girls younger
than she in high school life and some of the best ways
to cope with growing older.
“I wore my cheerleading uniform when I went to
Momingside Elementary School,” said Tripp.
During the session, she introduced herself and had
the students participate by having them ask questions
about “friendship, drugs, and classes” in the upper
grades.
Eighteen year old Wright also took a special talent
of his into local schools his athletic abilities.
Along with his talk and demonstration about sports,
Wright talked to younger guys about the wide variety
of extracurricular activities they could look forward

Daniel Wright said he thinks the
mentor program is a good thing to

to becoming involved in that is, if they keep their
bodies healthy by staying off drugs.
Wright said he “didn’t know what they thought
about high school life and what to expect as far as
friends.”
He did try to give them a few pointers in being
smart about choosing friends who are not into drugs,
he said.
Wright said he thinks the mentor program is a
good thing to have for the younger kids because it
gives them a positive influence from someone who is
not a whole lot older than they are, but at the same
time have more of life’s experiences to share than
someone their own age.
Tripp agreed. “Sometimes kids think high school
is scary. This helps them get ready and helps them
see good role models who say ‘lt’s OK if you don’t
do drugs.”
“I was happy to be chosen to participate,” added
Wright.

David Grantham
becomes first Teresi
fund graduate
Special to the Times-Journal
David Grantham, the first
recipient of a Jimmy Teresi
Scholarship Fund grant, has
become the first graduate.
Grantham received the Master
of Divinity degree in Christian
Education Dec. 14 at
Southeastern Baptist Theological
Seminary of North Carolina.
Grantham has begun a min
istry in South Carolina, according
to First Baptist Church officials.
Meanwhile, officials
announced the presentation of
funds to Joaquin Gonzales Jr,
who is a student at Brewton-
Parker College, and to Sean
Waters, a student at Southwestern
Baptist Theological Seminary at
Fort Worth, Texas.
Church officials hope, follow
ing a review of the fund, to award
additional scholarships this year.
Some 10 young men and
women are planning to respond to
calls into Christian service. Seven
of those are awaiting financial
assistance, an official said.
Some of that money will be
raised, they hope, during the
annual Jimmy Teresi Day schol
arship fund-raising effort during
February.
Mission Fest ‘97 will be held
during March at the Georgia
National Fairgrounds and
Agricenter. The theme of the
event will be related to Matthew
9:37-38.
