CROSSROADS CIVITAN CLUB
Perry, GA 31069
February 2,1997
Greetings to all Perry Area Clergy:
February 2-8 is Civitan International Clergy Appreciation
Week. The Crossroads Civitan Club joins with Civitans
around the world as we express to each you our gratitude
for your work in the world for the betterment of mankind,
and in particular for your work in the Perry community.
This significant tradition of Civitan was established in
early 1960 in Alburquerque, New Mexico. The week of
February 3 was select for this special recognition because
that date marked the anniversary of one of the most
stirring stories form World War 11. ON February 3,1943,
the United State troopship Dorchester was torpedoed in
frigid waters off Greenland. Four chaplains helped calm
the panic following the torpedo blast. Giving out life jack
ets until none were left, George L. Fox, Alexander D.
Goode, John P. Washington, and Clark V. Poling then gave
their jackets to soldiers. They were last seen by survivors
standing on the ship's deck, their arms locked together,
praying for the men leaving the sinking ship.
While your stories may not be as dramatic, we recognize
that each of you have dedicated yourselves to be God's
servants, sometimes sacrificing much to do His work. So,
in memory of those four special men on the troopship
Dorchester, we thank you for what you do.
For the members of Crossroads Civitan,
Rick Thompson, President
pastored three churches during
and after his schooling. He has
spoken in more than 1,000
revivals in 43 states.
He is a former pianist and
soloist for the Kingsmen Quartet
of Dallas, Texas, according to a
church news release.
Doerge is a former law
enforcement officer. He spoke at
high school assemblies in the
local system in 1996. He is a spe
cial instructor for law enforce
ment agencies on “Occult Related
Crime Investigation.”
Doerge will provide special
music during the week.
Everyone is invited; a nursery
will be provided.

tact the Rev. A. C. Truluck or John

Anthony M. Genovese, 0.5.A.,
from the Augustinian Friars, will
present “Believe the Good News:
We are Loved” during the Parish
Renewal Mission at Sacred Heart
Catholic Church in Warner
Robins. It will be held during the
week of Feb. 15-19. Monday,

will be ’ held at 7 p.m. in the

* Believe the Good News: We
are Loved is an evangelization
program that follows through on
St. Augustine’s thought, “God is
all bounty, while we are all need.”
This program is based on the
premise that the parish exists not
for itself, but for the mission of
Christ. People are called forth to
minister to one another in the
parish community, as well as to
those around them both where
they live and where they work. A
good community in the Christian
sense, is nothing other than the
practice of love.
Genovese was bom on Staten
Island, New York. He received his
bachelor’s degree from Villanova
University and his theological
training at the Washington
Theological Union.
He was ordained a priest in
June 19973. He has given parish
retreats in New York, New Jersey,
Pennsylvania, and Texas, as well
as married couples retreats and
workshops for engaged couples.
His Villanova parish became a
model for community develop
ment in sharing the Word of God.
The mission talk will be given
at 7 p.m., February 17-19.
Tuesday evening will conclude
with the Parish Lenten Penance
Service, refreshments will follow
the Wednesday service.

Potter seeks PD changes
By EMILY JOHNSTONE

Perry Police Chief George
Potter plans to call upon city

booking and jail area at the police

That follows a Jan. 29 incident
when Perryan Maurice Collier

According to Potter, Collier

spotted the subject walking along
Elko Road and brought him to the

“An investigation shows we
have some serious flaws in this
building,” he said.
