County Airport Authority meets in
new John Houser terminal building
By RICK JOHNSTONE
For the Times-Journal
Meeting in the brand new John
Houser Terminal building Feb.3 ,
members of the Perry-Houston
County Airport Authority decided
they would not need a part of the
loan they had secured to do the
work.
The group voted to give back
$50,000 out of the $250,000 loan
they had obtained.
“We can save on the interest if
we do that,” said airport manager
John Houser. “I have $50,000 I
don’t need.”
Houston County commissioner
Jay Walker suggested the authori
ty check with its attorney to “see
how to best do it,” on returning
the unused funds.
As for the new terminal, some
finishing touches are still being
made.
“Once we get that done, it (ter
minal) will be used for the pilots,”
said Dana Dickson of the authori
ty. “Then we will have to decide
what to do with the current fixed
base building.”
He said there are several
options for that building, which is
owned by the authority. They
include using it for a training
facility or tearing it down.
Fixed base operator Mark
Payne told the group he has had
some preliminary discussion with
a Lear jet operator at a Macon air
port.
He said he asked the pilot if he
would consider relocating his
shuttle service to the Perry-
Houston County Airport.
“Taxes are quite a bit higher in
Macon, so that guy is looking for
a good proposal out of Perry and
he would consider here,” said
Payne.

The Macon operator, who will
have five planes in his fleet, is
also considering moving to
Statesboro, according to Payne.
“We need to stay on top of
that,” authority chairman Gary
Peavy commented.
The Authority took a look at
taxes that are charged to pilots
who keep their planes in hangars
at the airport.
There has been some discus
sion about those pilots receiving
two tax bills, one from the city,
one from the county, for using the
facility.
“I don’t think we will lose a lot
of pilots because of these taxes,”
Peavy said.
He said those taxes are all ear
marked for the airport and
improvements there.
